No, the tone pots are switched out of circuit on positions 2 & 4 - makes those settings a bit brighter and accentuates the quack.

Are you saying the guitar is voiced brightly on purpose to bring out the quack in 2 & 4 and that realistically you would therefore need to turn the tone down a bit in pos 1,3,5 to suite what you are playing? I must admit I have done this automatically but as I said in my original post I wasn't sure if the elixir's were making it sound bright!
Anyway to clarify positions 2 & 4 are very nice indeed even without any tone controls!
