guidothepimmp >☹ So I was notified today that because of the inability to source quilted maple, that my custom build has come to a grinding halt. And, because I didn't want curly maple as a top, the plug has been pulled on my build. SUPER dissappointing. So for all you builders out thjere, where does one get quilted maple without selling a kidney? Any south african suppliers? Please pm me if you have contacts
Wizard I have no idea if they stock instrument quality wood, but I would try Rare Woods, Country Woods & Future Woods in Cape Town. Of course you're not in Cape Town ... (but they may have branches elsewhere)
Manfred-Klose You can also contact guitar luthiers in you area, and ask them if they can sell you one.
guidothepimmp yeh, thanks Manfred, waiting on word from a few.. Hopefully someone has. Flame/ curly seems to be so abundant, quilted, not so much ☹
Gearhead Simple solution here. If I had the choice between having a build cancelled on me or import a piece of wood and subtract the purchase from the build price...
Ray Well I asked the chairman of the ERWA and he reckons he doesnt think you'll find quilted maple here. Just a thought, have you considered going to pawn shops where you might find a piece of fuirniture then you can get someone to resaw it for you? Maybe also try: http://www.amwoodinc.com/instrument_category.aspx?x=0q%2fKaNMaWxxmXrN20R%2fVtA%3d%3d I havent ordered from them but their body blanks seem to be cheaper than other places. A Spanish bunch also not ordered from them yet: http://www.madinter.com/b2c/index.php?page=pp_productos.php&tbusq=1&ref=MET&md=1 Another thought is take a look at some of this Aus stuff but I dont know what their $ is like compared to the US$. http://luthierssupplies.com.au/index.php?cPath=133_136_233 Good luck.
Johnny-B Guido, have you tried Peter Buckle? He is a luthier living on the East Rand. The last number I have for him is (011) 973 4831.
