I have a Telkom 4MB line, but go through Axxess (www.axxess.co.za).

R500 p/month for my uncapped account, worked like a bomb for months now.

Being doing some more research, Seems like most of the uncapped packages are Shaped or Semi Shaped which will limit your downloading at peak times.

Anyone have more information on this, or experience?

Diamatrix (and I'm sure most of the others) don't just limit at peak times... they will revenge throttle you until your average usage hits below a certain average again. Heavy download one day, then next day and possibly longer your speed is not enough for a youtube vid. You're uncapped but unable to download :?

I'm busy fighting Afrihost over exactly that situation - they start moderate throttling after 30GB and by the time you go over 120GB, you are limited to a ridiculous 64K. My argument is that it is in effect a soft cap, so they should not be advertising it as "uncapped" - the Dictionary definition for uncapped is "without limits". "Unlimited downloads but we'll throttle the f*** out of you if you try utilize it" is not the same thing.

I have the whole deal with WebAfrica - both internet & ADSL line.
WebAfrica buys the line from Telkom & deals with Telkom ... so I never have to.

I contract with WebAfrica for the line. They purchase it from Telkom. They organized the line contract transfer & the speed upgrade.
The only thing I had to do was cancel my internet with Telkom. (yesterday's frustrating exercise)
WebAfrica also do it all on the phone - no forms.

Pricing for internet AND line is:
- 384 uncapped: 279pm
- 1Mbit uncapped: 489pm
- 4Mbit uncapped: 899pm

No other hidden costs.

In the real world (SA) international bandwidth pie is only so big, smart caching technologies helps to keep residual info in the country for the next user.

However, demand always outstrips supply so in the end everyone gets throttled in some or another way. Either by shaping or natural contention for data ..... it’s a thankless industry with no end in sight

I'm well aware of that Atilla - I've been on the Internet since the 9600 baud modem was king. There have always been limitations. At one point I even considered going leased line or getting an illegal satellite setup...

Where I have a problem is: don't sell me something, telling me it is one thing and then later turn around and say "sorry, we can't supply that, it's unrealistic. Take this dog turd as consolation". Like promises of 200GB before "fair use" comes into play before I buy and then start throttling me at 30GB - without even telling me. On a 4Mb line, 30GB is nothing, it barely covers a months worth of browsing.

Also the way it is done... AFAIC, feel free to shape the real bandwidth hogging protocols and sites to death during the day. I really don't mind. But to limit my http and FTP during the day affects my work. Why do you think I'm paying for a 4MB account?

Unfortunatly its the same goes for many annuity industries - promise X at the point of sale only to find out youre actuly only get Y- in real terms - complain - see fine print disclaimers.

Yes, and this will continue for a while ..even with WACS due in a couple of months. SEACOM has alleviated a demand but the problem still exists. Apps require more an more bandwidth etc etc also those users online in ZA use more bandwidth as the net opens up. We still only have arpound 10% of the ZA population online btw. We have a long way to go and it aint going to get better

Who are Neotel? What are they? Are they in opposition to Telkom - is that possible? Someone mentioned them in one of my queues.

Neotel were the first competition for Telkom when their monopoly ended. Unfortunately, they haven't had much impact anywhere but major cities and I see people referring to them as NeoFAIL, so I gather they are not doing a good job of it.
