A question on P-bass tone

So recently I fell in love with the tone of a P-bass.. PJ pups to be specific.. But theres no PJ basses in my price range.. So im curious on whats the secret to that tone.. Will a Fender Jaguar bass with PJ pups sound similar? Im also considering just a standard p-bass and eventually adding a j pup but im not al that keen about that idea..

Have you taken a look at the Squier range?
A Squier with a pup replacement can work just fine, especially if you're buying to budget.

Hmmm... The standard precision bass is very good - I have played some that are better than American Standard's I have played before, in my opinion. The Jaguar is also a very nice bass.

What's your price range?

I think the secret to "that" tone is simplicity (like a Telecaster). In your situation I'd find a P-Bass I like and add the J pickup later (but I'm never averse to mods involving routing).

Im starting to consider the standard p-bass .. Im current on a budget of about R6k.. I played the Mike Dirnt signature P-bass last week in dubai while visiting family... Nice 1951 style p-bass, with spilt coil pups and Badass II bridge... It was abit heavier (weight) then a standard p-bass which i like.. and the sound was really chunky in a good way.. Eventually adding the J pup on a 51 style p bass might be a lil strange but it could end up making a rocking bass even better.. Might torture myself another month and attempt to save abit extra to get it..

They had 5 fender basses in the music store in dubai.. Hw1 p-bass and j-bass for R8K, Mike Dirnt for R7K, Road worn J-Bass for R8K, standard p-bass for R5K... I played al 5 of them abd the Mike Dirnt really spoke to me.. The extra weight just made it feel alot better.. My brother and dad lives in dubai and travels to SA reguraly so i can make a pick once have the cash..
