I just wanted to get some sympathy from you guys. I used to have a set up...

Nicely set-up pc with a bought (not just audacity) recording and editing program (Can't remember the name though). Used a Berringer mixer through a USB interface, with a Samson condensor microphone with a pop filter. I used to do some recordings (not claiming they were world class, but) that were pretty descent. However then got divorced... The PC and mixer belonged to the wife, so not only did I lose some serious hardware and software I also lost all previously recorded songs. Keeping the microphone seemed pointless. So I let them have it as well...

Thinking back, I should've put up with her shit in order to keep my stuff. Don't know if I'll ever be in a position to replace.

Could have copied all the files to a flash drive? It does suck lose all the gear though especially if you have spent a lot time saving up to get it.

Leaving was an impulsive thing to do, so didn't bother copying. Worked out the other day, think it's gonna cost me around R7k... which isn't that much, but in current situation it might as well be R70k

What you'll never get back is those recordings (well, maybe if you ask nicely...). Those are irreplaceable. If you back yourself to recreate them from memory then you might be OK I suppose.

It should be easy enough to get those put onto a flash drive - or moved up to something like box.net for safe keeping. I've done a few little things that are valuable to me because they embody ideas/inspiration that I had at the time and may wish to revisit later. I've uploaded all of them to box.net and even if a meteor comes through the roof of the house right now and takes my PC out I have those little creations safe and sound.

You have my sympathies, not because of the gear and not because of the lost recordings. Those things can be replaced or recreated over time. I feel for you because of the hurt, anger and sadness a divorce causes. The big loss here is not the music gear is it?
