setting strings

I really want to lower the strings on my guitar so that they're closer to the neck for hammer-on's etc to be easier but I'm a total noob at the technical side of guitars and I'm terrified I'm gonna mess it up proper... How hard is it to do on a Fender Squire Strat (Affinity Series)? How easy is it to mess my guitar up and what are some of the things I must look out for (like fret buzz etc)?
Help would be much appreciated

Just did some more reading of the other threads and realised that my guitar probably needs 1 or 2 other things adjusted. can anyone tell me what I should be on the lookout for? Would just take it to a music shop but alas I live in a small town that doesn't have 1!!! lol ?
PS my exposure to other guitarists is pretty bad so I don't really know the jargon well so some extra explaining may be required...
