It's so good to read about Afrikaans songs and they turn out to be the good ones. All the utter shite ones are just getting way too much publicity these days.
Yes, Koos du Plessis, has got to be one of the best lyrics writers the world of Afrikaans music has ever seen - Kinders Van Die Wind being a superb example. Another one I'm quite partial to is "Nog Een Koppie Koffie" by the late Lucas Maree, another of the lyrical greats.

As an instrumental musician who performs and listens mostly to instrumental music , i can still appreciate good lyrics But it must be melodic and the voice must have good musical tone , i can't stand hearing anything sung off key or un melodic even if the lyric is good , but yes some very cool lyrics out there .

But what constitutes melodic? Are any blues songs melodic? And when you say musical tone, are you talking about the timbre? Bob Dylan or Tom Petty are examples of singers with really divisive timbre.
