I dig this songs lyrics.
Primus-Sgt Baker
Sgt. Baker is my name
I'm gonna teach you how to play the game
of warfare
Suddenly it appears to me
You got a bit much dignity
For your own good, boy
Yes sir, yes sir.
I will rape your personality
Pummel you with my own philosophy
Strip you of your self-integrity
To make you all a bit like me
I said right, left
Sgt. Baker here again
And if you calls me "puddin Tame"
I'll stomp you down, boy
Steers and Queers
Steers and Queers where you come
From there's just steers and queers
And you ain't got no horns, boy
Yes sir, yes sir
I will rape your personality
Pummel you with my own philosophy
Strip you of your self-integrity
To make you all a bit like me
I said right, left

Well if we're talking about the lot of the military man, I always had a soft spot for this one
Hou my vas, korporaal
Ek’s ’n kind skoon verdwaal
Gaan ek weer my tjerrie sien
As ek van die trein afklim?
Ja, sowaar, korporaal
Dis mos swaar, korporaal
Ek speel oorlog met my beste dae
Ja ja ja
Ek en al my maatjies bymekaar
James Phillips was one of the great South African songwriters.

Talking about Afrikaans lyrics - 'Kinders van die Wind' - Koos du Plessis was pretty amazing too.

My Afrikaans can't like to be very good, but I did enjoy Riaan Malan's
Alien Inboorling album, especially the song "Bloekomboom". I was a big fan of the Genuines back in the 80s. I thought they were the best live band in Jo'burg, and they had a lot of Afrikaans songs.

one day i can like to be very homesick in arsetralia. and the only thing that came to me to play was this song. as they say; 'die woorde is vergete, en tog, die deuntjie draal'. played it over and over for about half an hour. got me through quite a bit, and i think it might have something to do with being back here.
now, if this thread is about lyrics first, why bring this 'deuntjie' up? simply put, it is the liedjie in its entirety that sits in my soul, not one part or the other.

It's so good to read about Afrikaans songs and they turn out to be the good ones. All the utter shite ones are just getting way too much publicity these days.
Yes, Koos du Plessis, has got to be one of the best lyrics writers the world of Afrikaans music has ever seen - Kinders Van Die Wind being a superb example. Another one I'm quite partial to is "Nog Een Koppie Koffie" by the late Lucas Maree, another of the lyrical greats.
Nog een koppie koffie
Kan die einde van die aand
Met nog 'n wyle uitstel
Voor ek huis se kant toe staan
Want te skielik is die tyd verby
En sal ek haas my ry moet kry
Te gou moet ek groet en huis toe gaan
Nog een koppie koffie voor ek gaan
As die stiltes tussen woorde
Skielik dikker as die mure raak
En die nag onrusbarend
Deur die sinkdak en die balke kraak
Raak my hart verlore
In 'n soektog na nog woorde
Om jou aandag vir een oomblik nog te skaak
Om jou hart vir net een oomblik nog te raak
Herhaal koor (Nog een koffie...)
Want die stiltes tussen woorde
Slaan soos vuiste teen my ore
En ek weet dat jy ook moeg is
En dat jy wil bed toe gaan
En ek sien ook dat jy heerlik
In jou hande sit en gaap
En ek word al hoe banger
Vir die groter, diepier slaap
Herhaal koor

As an instrumental musician who performs and listens mostly to instrumental music , i can still appreciate good lyrics But it must be melodic and the voice must have good musical tone , i can't stand hearing anything sung off key or un melodic even if the lyric is good , but yes some very cool lyrics out there .

I never studied literature or poetry but my life was always about song.
My quotes are all from songs. My life revolved around song.
The lyrics are all important to me. 8)

I might sound tappet, but I quite enjoy Riana Nel these days. But my all-time favourite song-writer is Mark Hall (Casting Crowns) his lyrics just touches me so deeply.

You don't sound tappet because you listen to Riana Nel, you sound tappet because you use the word "tappet" ?

Ons is vryheid belowe maar het vrees ontvang
Met pyn en trane en begrafnissang
Die reenboog is rooi deurweek met bloed
Op die horison agter die begrafnisstoet
Doodstraf, bring die doodstraf terug
"Doodstraf" - K.O.B.U.S {Album - 'Swaarmetaal' }
K.O.B.U.S are simply the best afrikaaner Metal band EVER. IMO.

I dig these lyrics they lol ?
C'mon kiddies gather round. Who's your foremost friend in town?
From main to maple the name resounds, Professor Nutbutter.
He's the one, the humble one, the Barkley County prodigal son.
Here to serve only you, Professor Nutbutter.
At old Nutbutter's house of treats from jellied jams to sacks of sweets,
There's creamy and nutatious spreads for all.
Chemist, master of entomology the professor for a modest fee
Will cure what ails you, garunteed Professor Nutbutter.
It's alright, don't fear the worm.
C'mon kiddies don't be shy be youthful til the day you die.
The man the myth, the magic of Professor Nutbutter.
He's the one the only one the Meeklybville prodigal son.
Here to help us with ourselves, Professor Nutbutter
It's alright to fear the worm.
