Guitar tuning for Recording.

I cant believe the amount of times I've heard 'project recordings' where the guitars are out of tune. Should it not be the first thing you check before you record. Or is it just me, or am I insane and the only one who can hear in and out of tune?

I can't speak for your hearing, but you'd think that being in tune with whoever you're playing with is one of the first things you take care of. If I'm playing solo then my guitar has to be in tune with itself, so to speak, but the moment I'm playing with one or more other people - and this includes rehearsals - everybody has to be on the same page tuning wise.

People who send me clips for audition purposes. People who post stuff on this very forum.
I'm wondering if its a general thing other people have noticed.
I was busy at a clients place recently. The son was in his final year at COPA. he started rehearsing a song with a acoustic guitar, he new something was wrong, but he kept trying. The damned thing was really badly out of tune. It was quite embarrassing.

I remember watching on the set of Spud how many times they double check their light meters.

Checking the tuning of a guitar is so simple. Even if your ear is half there, a tuner is so quick.

But then again, what if the intonation is out? or a cop is applied incorrectly? The guitar could be in tune, but sound out.

it has nothing to do with hearing or being a lefty ? . my ears are also quite sensitive to tuning. if you're playing with other people, or in front of people, or for people - like on youtube or here for instance, your guitar had better be in tune. at least with itself. it's a simple bloody thing. and tuners start simple and inexpensive. you can get 'em from about a hundred bucks, and before you start laying out long dollars for effects and hectic amps and goodies like such, i agree. get the basics right. and a lot of recording software comes with a built-in tuner for pete's sake!

sorry. i've had a nasty bug for a few days. hasn't left me in the best frame of mind. >☹

@DH, I pick on lefties becaus they're the only minority I can rag on without getting in trouble with the PC brigade. I, on the other hand, am rather tall, so feel free to make basketball comments.

@averatu - no worries bud. i'm a lefty who learned to play right-handed from the beginning - i wasn't given a choice. you have no ideas the kinds of issues this has left me with. would i have been better as a lefty? we'll never know now, will we? don't get me started, i can't afford the psych bills...
