Howdy,
I'm joining very late but gonna give this a try! ? Memorizing the fretboard is like physical excercise, you know its good for you yet you always find a way out of it! ?
Today would be my day 1 then...
thanks for the post!
evolucian
You are very welcome man... and good luck ?
Mannoroth
The diagrammes aren't "lefty-friendly"... >☹
Don't worry, I created my own in powerpoint! ?
evolucian
lol... you lefty's can mirror image automatically... you're gifted that way ?
Averatu
Considering advances in technology and medicine, I'm sure the leftism can be surgically corrected.

Guitar Adventures – 7 Day Challenge – Day 7
*And on the 7th Day... we rested*
Review and Reasoning:
So, we have come to Day 7 with a lot of work achieved so far. You’ve learned:
• The notes on the fretboard in the key of C and G
• Three different shapes for the G major scale (starting on degrees I-iii-vi). These three shapes land up occupying 12 frets which makes learning the fretboard that much easier. A snippet of extra info: Degree’s iii and vi are also substitutes for the I (chordally speaking). If this confuses you, it’s ok. When the time is right it will snap into place.
• The notes of C were learned going up single strings. Day 6 had you put them all together and use the degrees outlined above to make further sense of it. If there were those that thought for themselves and did the same (going up the fretboard) with the notes from the G major scale – well done!
• The major scale starting on the 5th string
• A few valuable theory snippets thrown in here and there. Those are vital to understanding a key in how it is made up and how the chords (briefly) function inside it.
• The shapes used were not just to merely span the fretboard. They were also used to see the sets of notes inside the shape itself. This helps to climb the neck in any way that you choose.
• The fingering used was also not accidental. If you look at the first G major shape… take a look at where the 2nd finger lands up the whole time. On those first four strings, it is the same position – which means that it’s only the index finger that is required to move to a new position. This in turn helps you stretch your fingers a little, as well as be an aid in speed and position shifts. The hand is almost stationary. Hope that reveals something for you.
• If you take a look at that shape again, you’ll notice that the trebles use the fingering of 1-2-3. The simple reason for this is that our bending fingers are either the middle or the ring finger. When we reach those high notes, bends become easier and fall into place.
• When learning a shape in the open position, try to use the same fingering you would if you were playing it an octave higher (12 frets). It’s not necessary, but it’s good to learn nonetheless.
• The reason for learning strings D-B and G-E together was twofold. One – Seeing two notes on separate strings helps in expanding the memory and the brain into not just seeing the single string. Two – As it turns out, those two notes being used together happen to be intervals of 6th’s. This is very common in most styles of music – particularly Blues and Country. It is also used in Jazz and Rock too. A little hint: string sets E-D and A-G will give you intervals of 7th’s. Also very useful to learn. Bluesy/jazzy tinge to it. Experiment to your hearts content.
• And finally, the visualization aspect. Your brain went into overdrive this week in learning the various shapes and notes… now you have worked on a routine that can make something a second nature to you.
Congratulations are in order to those who succeeded. And a congratulations to those who did not. It was a challenge to some - and plain sailing for others. If you learned something, then my task is accomplished. Woohoo!
And a big thank you to all who took part. Your christmas present will vanish tomorrow... elves demanding respect or some shite like that. Download it while you can. And Thanks again ?

Sorry man... was a once off. I will be posting some other stuff soon (January would be the 'soon'). When I finally put my site back up mid next year at the latest, this series will be on there. I hope from having just read that last sentence that you understand why the material won't be repeated?
All the best,
Peter

No really no, but no worries.
