OK so I turn 10 in Feb and my wife says I can get a new guitar (in New York)??

Leap year baby turning 40, going to New York to celebrate it AND wife says I can get a new guitar! So basically I need New York music shop advice and more importantly what shall I get.....(I reckon I could push for up to around $1600)

Short list:

Gibson Les Paul (I have 7 electrics and no Les paul - can't be right!)
PRS Mira
Music Man Axis
Fender Custom Shop something or another (maybe 2nd hand!)
Suhr something or another
Your idea?

I don't know I am funny about these things, I want millions of guitars all the time but then when presented with a good opportunity I go blank, like I do sometimes when trying to choose the right parking pay in an empty car park!!

Anyway it needs to be something special, a keeper and not just a guitar I bought because I could!

Any ideas for something special my good people?

My boss is a gear head and visited New York a few times..

Names I remember him talking about are

Mannys Music and something along the lines of 34th Street music or something to that effect..

A nice american fiddle like suhr or music man if thats your thing...

Les paul is iconic of course..

I was in NY last year. It was so big and confusing, I couldn't find any of those music stores.. I found a cool M&M shop, bought lots of sweets instead.. ?

Can't go wrong with a custom strat, seriously!! ? But then again, Suhr's are pretty awesome. Are you looking for an electric or acoustic? USA stocks some nice acoustics that you can't really find here too easily.

If you go for a Les Paul by Gibson, I'd reckon you try to get a store - it's the recession after all - to get you a 2nd hand 1958 reissue like MikeM has. Best Gibson LP for the money available.

Yup. Squeeze the budget a little more and get a reissue. Imo, pretty much the best LP money can buy current production wise.

Quick answer: it's made by the custom shop - a different factory with different people. It's also made to traditional Les Paul specifications for those who think the originals were fine as they were (single piece solid backs (no chambering or weight relieving), ABR1 bridges, lightweight tailpieces, etc.) In my experiences of 2 walls full of recent Gibsons, the reissue LP standards seem to be much more carefully made than either the Gibson USA models or the more standard items that have been shifted to Custom Shop production. Reissues are still Gibson's flagship products and they tend to do a good job with them.

It's a bit much for a slightly modded Burny in not great condition IMO. Not a top-of-the-line model either. I can point you to a great vendor of vintage MIJs at very reasonable prices who I'm sure will ship here though Gearhead. ?

Get a nice Custom Shop Stratocaster: if you don't like the whole relic thing there's always the Custom Classics. They truly are the perfect Strats.

If you're a fan of MIJ, they're no easier to find in the USA than here. In fact, here is easier, since there's a Tokai dealership that folks in the USA can only dream about (although they happily import new and old guitars from Japan and here). But if you want old MIJs, or MIJ models not in Tokai's current lineup, you can just do some research on the various fora that focus on those guitars. Plenty of people are trading back and forth.

America, unsurprisingly, is an ideal place to buy American guitars. Most old MIJs, or weird MIJs, are in Japan or Europe.
