only if you listen to bad and sloppy metal.(i am not gonna mention names here ?)
if you listen to good metal, pantera, symphony x, inflames, i think it can actually improve your lifestyle and mental illness and keep you focussed in life

I wonder if it has anything to do with the amount of crap metals fans have to take from people around them?
I remember my mother being disappointed to hear me listen to certain music. My father hated the idea of guns n roses. I got such flack for it.
I didn't want to talk to them after that. So they could easily say metal made me feel a certain way, but it was actually the judgement they generated doing it.
Studies and statements like this only serve to drive deeper the wedge between people who conform to certain norms and others who choose to challenge them
Regardless of how we interpret it, someone's crazy mother, could be yours, is going to tell her knitting club friends, "you should hear what my son/daughter listens to. I think he/she is going to end up killing someone. I tell them every day how I feel."
Btw, I think I can see where the religious aspect could come into this, and I can safely say the fault lies not with religion, but with extremism.

I think metal fans to get judged a lot. Most people think we are these hateful people. Ready to kill at the drop of a hat.
Ready to summon the demons from hell. And kill virgins.
My mom thinks I'm mad listening to slayer? She thinks am crazier when I listen to Rammstein.
My dad does not care. He thinks its great that I can play a lot of slayer songs. My mom does think its great to that I can play metal but she is not a fan.(yet she was into punk when she was 16, she had a mowhawk)
Most girls tell me there is something wrong with me when I tell them I dig slayer and megadeth and so on. But I don't care. Why should I lie about what I enjoy?
Back when I was 17-18 I was given a lot of flak by my so called friends. You will never get a girl if you listen to that. Its going to make you kill yourself. bah!
But gaming is aslo getting a lot of flak. Oh noes he is playing a game that makes you kill people. Its just people looking for a scapgoat.
I will never hide what I enjoy. Not for anyone.
I listen to slayer for the horror movie feel to it.
I listen to Megadeth bec of the political and life experiances that I can relate to.
so on so forth. Also I really enjoy thrash solos.

I think all of us choose to listen to music that resonates with our moods or state of mind.
To say the music is a cause of our state of mind is debatable. It may be true on a short-term basis, but long-term mental illness cannot be caused by any one type of music.
The lady was merely saying that people who fit into a certain mental demographic gravitate toward Metal.
That is NOT the same as saying all Metal fans are whack jobs (Tempting as that may be!!)
I've been listening to Brad Paisley lately (Country dude who plays a wicked Telecaster) but have had no inclination to buy a pickup truck or some cowboy boots. However the current Tele-mania, as well as some situations in my life currently have me listening to cowboy music.. go figure, considering when I was growing up, and for the majority of my life it was Rock music or nothing..
If I've had "Don't stop me now" running thru my head lately does it mean I have latent homosexual tendencies? Methinks not!!
I love the blues, and have never listened to it and walked away feeling worse than before, even though it is laced with hardship, it still is a very triumphant music which somehow lifts you up, filled with irony and humour.
If you love it, listen to it, play it and enjoy it.
If you're a loony, get help!!

i have suspected this for decades to be honest ...but the cause an effect is the other way around ....as pointed out previously ....those susceptible to mental illness will seek out metal as music of choice.
I am gonna go a lil further here too ...andother of my suspicions is that ppl prone to listening to metal music as a group have a higher IQ than the average too. yeah yeah , shoot me down but i have been around metal and followers all my life and thats my hypothesis ..one day i will do my thesis on this too..... and as we know ppl with higher iq are prone to ....wait for it....... mental illnesses..... logic my dear watson ...
an noooo, i aint slating anyone for liking bieber either .... or anyone else , purely my observations
BMU
I think Singe pretty much summed it up.
The cause and effect direction isn't always easy to pin in these studies. From observation I'd say metal definitely attracts a somewhat higher % people with issues. It may then proceed to make those issues worse for -some- of them.
Personally I just love the energy & technicality. It's been a long time since I scratched pentagrams on school desks or acted antisocially in any way. ?

I think key is to live a balanced life....even though you have "issues". The old sayings "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and "garbage in, garbage out" have a message for all of us.....Fact is we all have issues of some sort...it's how you deal with it that makes the difference to either becoming "suicidal and hateful" and getting yourself back on track again.....
I would say listen to your favourite metal if you like but also take time to "smell the roses" ? . and being part of a circle of friends with diverse attitudes and interests, is therapeutic and uplifting in a way. Come to think of it, I have very few close friends who are musos ???

at least you'll have a car! even if it isnt a bmw!
same thing really! tastes differ, and a girl that might not be easy on your eyes, is very easy on someone else's eyes!

I'm in a relationship with the most beautifull wonderful intelleient woman on the planet(imho), AND, she's as much of a metalhead as I am. I would never pretend for any one, let alone get into a relationship based on a pretence, and neither should you. Stick to your guns, also known as personal integraty!!!

This. Dude I totally agree. If a girl that can't accept who you are then she won't be worth it.

I play violent video games, watch violent movies and in grades 10 and 11 I listenend to NOTHING but System of a Down's first five albums.
I think I have quite a sunny disposition. Excuse me while I go kill myself!

Its a conspiracy, metal is just a bunch of subliminal messages promoting a massive suicide pact!!!

Hear, hear! Some people might need out of a rut. But at the same time, when people are saying women won't like a metal head, it's only because none of the women they happen to know
are metal heads. That should be really obvious.
To draw an analogy: If you're a South African, you're really far less likely to meet a Finnish woman. But don't listen to the Finns who tell you that you should get Finnish citizenship to meet a woman because Finnish women don't typically date South Africans (statistically speaking). There are women in South Africa too. See what I'm saying?
