Date a Gibson LP

Would anyone be familiar with the Gibson serial number system. I looked on the site and decided after 15min to ask the experts. This is a friend's LP, he says it was built in 79 from a 59 left over body? It needs TLC, the bridge pup is screwd, but the neck pup has a really warm bluesy tone. The pick guard is in a box somewhere.

Agreed. Highly unlikely. (no pics)

But it should be straightforward. '79 LPs have a body shape distinctively different from a '59. If it was built in '79 and has that body shape, it was not made from a leftover '59.

Yes. A '79 (from the serial: 7XXX9...) with a '79 sharp horn. The '59 story is just that. And think. If it was a '59 body, who'd cover up all that delicious flame?

Yip...a '79 with a 3-piece neck and big headstock. Still a nice guitar.

There was the story going round that the (first) '68 re-issues were made from '50's left overs.....just a myth of course

Hehe. Don'd dis the 3 piece necks Vic. The Norlin fans will eat you for breakfast. As they point out, Gibson's flagship model in the '50s, the L5 had a three piece maple neck. The mahogany necks on LPs were a concession to keeping the guitar cheaper. It certainly does not negatively affect the tone and makes the necks slightly hardier. I also prefer mahogany. But it's purely out of the tradition of the thing.

No...! I'm not dissing the 3-piece neck...it's just one of the characteristics of a 70's LP... I did say "nice guitar" ?
