Amphenol Soldering Problem

I bought Amphenol Jacks for the first time to solder to an old lead I found.

The problem is, that lead used to work, and now since I have soldererd it... it doesn't.

The first jack I soldered worked fine, I left the one old one on to test, and it worked, Then I tried the second new jack which is a straight Amphenol Jack. As far as I am aware, the wire in the middle goes to the little U shaped metal piece whilst the outer non-shielded wire goes on the metal platform below. I got frustrated cause the jack casing was not fitting on the jack, I had to bang it against the table to get it out. Only then I saw a little plastic wedge piece that I had to align (they don't make this obvious to you). I got it in, but... No sound..

From this description can you figure out any problems?

yeah, its tricky to solder to the plate at the bottom, doesn't stick easy on those, I had trouble with mine too. maybe take it apart again, desolder, clean with alcohol and use a bit of sandpaper to roughen the area around the hole where the shield goes, then solder it again. Word of caution, if there's a blob of solder on the outside the jack cannot be assembled, its a snug fit so you must solder it on the inside.

They can be a bit tricky, but I just did it like the guy does it in this video and it went smoothly. Maybe have a look.

I don't know what cable you are using but if it is Mogami be sure to remove the inner black sheath, which is conductive, otherwise the cable will short.
Make sure your cables are trimmed to exactly the right length before soldering.
I use liquid rosin which I touch onto the two points to be soldered on the connector and the shield and centre conductor, and then tin the 4 items.
This makes it easier to form a joint. The time the soldering iron is in contact is usually about 3 seconds. The less solder, the better. Hope this helps.
