I was browsing some storage suggestions etc. and came across this beauty:

Wall Hooks

These are most often seen on the walls of guitar stores, where there are dozens of instruments to be displayed. These are good, because the guitar can be placed in an out of the way spot, like over a table or in a corner, and also be openly displayed. These are just a U-shaped piece of metal, covered in some sort of rubber or soft plastic.

The piece is screwed to the wall, and the headstock rests snugly between the two pieces of metal. In regards to plasterboard walls be sure to drill into the timber studs. The weight of the guitar will not damage itself, and nothing will break as a direct result of being stored in this way. Considering the stress put on the instrument by the strings, the additional impact of gravity would be minimal.

When you are selecting a spot to hang your guitar, you should not hang it on an outside wall. These are subject to more temperature changes, and in the long term can damage the instrument.

I suppose it will save me having to towel them off the day after it rains.

Well, mine were on the garden (outside wall). So I'm worried that if I put the hooks on the other side, passers-by might be tempted to steal them. But I'll give it a try...

Lol. A+ for lateral thinking.

My guitars are wall hung usually, but I don't leave them there when I'm gone for long. Inside the case has still got to be the best. But elevated; not on the ground. (I have a recurring burst waterpipe/flood damage nightmare.)

Good thinking. This may be a very unusual occurrence, but it's tragic for guitar owners when it happens.

But in all seriousness, I have been told that upright pianos should also not be positioned against (the inside of) outside walls - for similar reasons than those presented above.

Hmmm, US based article.........I don't think that this is such an issue in SA as we build house properly using brick and mortar.........Not wood framed houses.

@fff, well spotted. it isn't such a prob here as it is there for the reason you stated, and it will also not be such as problem in areas of sa where temp (and humidity) fluctuations are less extreme. and, naturally, it will have a more pronounced effect on acoustic guitars than on electric, but you will see it on your electrics, over time.

i just play it safe and wrap mine in condoms on an inside wall like the lady at the clinic said.
