Hi Keira
I think the 9 string is the right instrument for you. Who were you thinking of asking to build one? I found a luthier in Utah that manages to build impressive flamencos with more than 6 strings. What worries me though is the climate difference between there and here and what that might do to an expensive guitar. And of course there is the obvious worry of: how the hell do I deal with 8 strings .... ?
I also love the ring of the lowest string. I am so glad you said that. Do you also think this guy is not just a virtuoso but seems emotionally connected to this piece (referring to Sicomoro) evident in the contrast between space and shred but also tone?
I don't think I have ever been as inspired by a piece of guitar music as by Sicomoro.
hi Conrad ........
as for a luthier i would seriously think of approaching murray kuun , i absolutely love his work and his classicals have awesome tone ...but i'd want the 9 string to be electric tho..........however it's merely an idea right now............. my style would lend to it ....but maybe it's a bit over the top......... so not quite at the point to want to order one tomorrow ......... still sleeping on it .....cos the reality is the extended range guitars or hybrids like i favour are NOT cheap and when i'm not even sure if it's right for me........... it's a weird situation cos to find out i'd prob have to buy one ............. pity i know of any 9 string bass/guitar hybrid players in jhb or i'd just try it that way .............. by asking someone to allow me a few hours on their instrument ......
but yes i'd wager murray kuun could build me a good one ?
as for your question re the video ....... i must say and don't hate me for it .. i found some of his sections too shred influenced and very emotionless he was just blowing scales , however with excellent technique and accuracy .but just playing fast does not intruige me in fact it puts me off many players .........i must say i love the way paco uses little bursts of speed/shred to liven up a piece but it's never extended just a few bars then back to melodious flamenco playing .but then in other sections of the video i felt his soul in what he was doing .............and i get what you say about him ........ so for me i'm in mixed opinion .........of course he's nothing but excellent but maybe not exactly what i appreciate in a flamenco player and as i always say "viva la difference" but i'd still rather listen to paco than him if i had to choose ....very personal but paco has way more soul in his playing and i feel every note ....... but thats just me ...... ?
