Rolling stone 100: Who is hot? Who is hotter? Who is less hot?

The recent RS "hot 100" is, of course, their 2nd such list. The previous list was released in 2003.

I've compared the two lists to see who is deemed hotter this year and who is deemed less hot.

The first two columns represent the 2011 rankings. The "move" column shows the move relative to 2003. EG if you were 15 in 2003 and 18 in 2011 your move is -3.

An asterisk indicates that the 2003 player did not make the 2011 list.

He's not there. Nor are Vai and Satriani. It depends on what criteria the judges apply. Why is Neil Young so high up the list? It's not like he's that good a player technically, so there must be other reasons, "influence" and so on, for his being where he is.

Some of the entries surprise me. EG Springsteen. Now I like the Boss actually, and I think he's an important figure in rock, but NOT as a guitarist. Despite having calculated moves I don't take the numbers absolutely literally. I don't believe they're saying that Mick Ronson is absolutely better than Mike Bloomfield, but only by a little and absolutely not as good as Tom Morello, but only by a little. But I do draw inferences from big gaps or movements.

So Johnny Ramone way ahead of Tom Verlaine? Hmmm....

In fact I don't think they ever have!

They just hash out the same gibberish every year with a few modifications.

The only thing I do agree with is Bruce Springsteen. I was very impressed by his lead work on he's wife’s Album Patti Scialfa, Play it as lays. I’ve always felt he’s a very underrated guitarist, especially his acoustic stuff.

Then again the issue is "Who's hot, or who is hotter," which is just
a good old tabloid read, when you sitting on the toilet.

Fascinating Bob. Clearly criteria couldn't have changed that dramatically because Kurt Cobain made both lists (a real test case since he barely played above a beginner level - Johnny Ramone looks like Vai by comparison).

Definitely a reinstatement of Eddie van Halen in people's minds. But some of the big changes seem pretty arbitrary. Why did David Gilmour get so little recognition back then, and so much now? Why is Neil Young more popular now, when you consider how popular he was in the '90s?

Or how come Albert King and Chet Atkins (how did he get omitted the first time?) suddenly come from nowhere into high places? Chet is hardly more popular now than he was then.
