I side with the other "Pro's" who let him have his 3 minutes, IF he isn't so tanked he's gonna hurt my guitar.
I've had some good fun with some good players, and some GREAT fun with the wannabees.
(I once was one, and have a lot to thank from the guys who "Let me have a go", so I feel it's my turn to give something back.)
Let's get another thing straight.. It's a GUITAR, not a human being.. It won't disintegrate in the hands of someone else..
If it does then you shouldn't be playing it but preserving it in an air conditioned glass case.
Furthermore, having a go on someone's girlfriend is a sh1tty comment.. If you want to say no, have the balls to say no, don't go the next step to becoming a dwis.
There, that's my rant..
The good guys get the good gigs, then they keep them.

Dude, well said. I have been returning to this topic a few times and then leaving it. But I think you summed up the way I see it as well.
I learnt alot from being the "anoying dude" when I was younger.

I have a cunning routine that tends to dissuade anyone from wanting to pick up my guitars at a gig: I sweat all over them so they're thoroughly soiled by the end of the first set.
If I use one guitar for the whole gig it gets so fouled with gig-juice that even I don't want to pick it up!

I love the mid-song stuff... It's always during the solo isn't it?
People asking me whether they can have the champagne from our table while
I'm in the middle of improvising over Giant steps... okay okay... it wasn't giant steps
but it sure as hell wasn't Autumn Leaves.
It even happened Saturday, sortof... I was on stage with a student of mine at
a concert and we were going to play 2 jazz pieces. I started an intro/warm-up
which was a blues with a walking bassline... when the owner of the guitar school
who is also a pro(classical guitarist) walked up to me and started asking me to tell
the audience something about the student's history with the school... I was kind-of chuffed
that I managed to play the whole first blues form with the walking bass while having a conversation
off to one side. ?
Once I was making frequent eye contact with a girl in the audience so she wandered over to the owner
of the club and gave him a piece of paper to give to me with her number(later, or so she assumed...).
Instead he walked straight up to me after speaking to her in the middle of my solo saying things like
"you lucky bugger" etc etc.
Musical experiences are the best.

My guitar (along with all the other band gear) is the equipment that I use to feed my family, pay the bond etc. etc. It is too much of a risk to let somebody else, beginner or virtuoso have a go on it. Things go wrong and gear gets broken. It's happened before and that it is why I have my own rules. Maybe one day you hand over your axe to somebody and when they are done they dont put it back on the stand properly - guitar falls and chunks of fretboard goes flying. Not a nice feeling believe you me. It doesnt take 3 minutes, only 3 seconds for damage to be done.

Once after we played a show, as I was packing my fender away into its case, this guy approached me and said "Great show, I love you strat, I also own a strat, can I have a look?"
My fender is a telecaster.
A guy once told me that he owned a 1962 Gibson Stratoblaster...
Ha Ha Ha Ha, now thats a real special guitar!!!!!!! ? Thats funny!

Arno,
Fair point, Like I said before If you have reasons for saying no, go ahead.
I have supported my family for YEARS working the pro circuit in SA and overseas. The only thing that has ever happened to my gear is people breaking into my house and stealing it. Martin acoustics, USA Strats, Amps, speakers, everything.. 4 times!! Not once did a wannabe do any damage to my gear. I'm sorry if you've had other experiences and can understand why you'd be reluctant to repeat it.
Now,, where did you say you were gigging??? ? 8)

Oh, and I wanted to add that I don't think we should put certain songs down.
I studied a degree in jazz but when I'm at a family gathering or a braai I still
play stairway to heaven, with or without you, etc etc etc. Those songs work. ?
There is a time and place for everything.

Kimberley?!? What venue? I'll be at work till about twelve tonight so I won't make it, but it will be nice to know for the future. Next time you play here, please let me know. Would love to go watch.
As for the gear issue, I'm not a pro so I value my stuff differently. I love it when folks want to play my gear, and have in the past lent out guitars and stuff to folks I barely know. (Got most of it back too.) But a drunk stranger isn't going to touch my stuff. Even if you're a pro or a rock star in you're own right, if you've had too much to drink I'll tell you to bugger off.

We're at Magersfontein Golf Estate for a pritate party for the dude that won the SA Open...not that I care much for golf. We're packing up afterwards and going straight back to JHB for soundcheck at 10 am...no sleep till Sunday nite.

I just want to say that I see no reason why anybody should feel compelled to hand over to a stranger something that is not only a valuable instrument but also a tool that is vital to getting your job done.
Nothing wrong with doing it and it's your right to do so, but nothing wrong with declining either.

I don't think it's a matter of handing over your guitar to some stranger to play, I think it's a matter of saying to this stranger.......listen dude, I've just finished playing a 3 hour gig, I was exhausted before the gig even started, in fact I was exhausted during soundcheck, the last thing I feel like doing now is listening to you play through my rig, or showing you how I play that riff, please I need to pack up and head on home....thanks for coming.
It's a different story if the guy comes over after the show and wants a quick peak at your pedalboard and very quickly thanks you for the show and leaves...but asking you if he can play your guitar, sorry, that's BS.
I remember at a Mark Beling gig a few weeks ago.
The band finishes their final set, and 30 seconds later some guy walks up to the stage and starts asking Mark a bunch of questions.
I'm sitting and watching this, now Mark's the kindest most accommodating man you'll ever meet, but he's just finished a 1 hour set of some serious guitar playing and performing the vocals at the same time (it's very hard work), the sweat is pouring down his head, he's busy trying to "shut down", all he needs is some guy asking him whether his Blues Driver pedal has the Keeley mod or the Analogman mod.
Respect the musicians, first of all they deserve the respect, and secondly they need their space and privacy.

Wow yes for us muso's it's a tough call . As many said one can't just have anyone up who will hack away but on the other hand i love muso's who come to my gigs and play . . So if you do come to a gig of mine bring a guitar but i do insist they play with me so usually that's jazz standards and i love that interaction ,and with the genre being jazz it ensures most if not all who play can really play jazz and it's amazing how many amazing impromto sessions i've had with incredible players who i met only minutes before . So i'm very for having someone up to sit in at a gig, however i'm not gonna allow them to play by themselves while i grab a drink and i'm not definately not afraid to be rude and to just yank the guitars cable out of the amp before the 1st chorus if they can't play what they said they could cos it's still my show and i'll gladly jam but won't allow someone to just play random licks and test the gear ultimately i'm responsible for what happens on my stage. So yes i have ground rules but i encourage players to sit in ?

For me it is not about the guitar or the time wasted with any such 'goon', it's the "ethic" in question - a real guitarist/musician would never approach another musician at a gig and ask to play (in this context) !

Best comment so far. Thank you, I feel better now.
