I get it quite often at gigs that intoxicated strangers come and talk to me and claim to be guitarists. The next step is usually "Mind if I have go on your guitar?" to which I reply "Mind if I have a go on your girlfriend?" Luckily, most of the time there is an acoustic guitar nearby and the other band guys are much more tollerant than me. Mr. Fast Fingers then proceed to pull off the most intricate lick that he knows, which is usually one of the following and almost always played totally wrong and very badly: Wonderwall, Smoke on the water, Long train running, Lightning Crashes and the ultimate plonker, Nothing else matters. Let me know what other gems you guys have come accross and let's compile a list of the top 10 biggest eggs you can lay while trying to impress somebody.

I have a certain response to people that ask me about my money situations (earnings, etc.) but that's a bit rough to post here :?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not being nasty here, just poking a bit of fun at a small sector of our guitar bretheren. No harm intended. Then again, maybe sometimes I'd rather have a guit wrapped around my head than having to listen to somebody playing the riff for Seven nation army over and over while I have to pack up gear...

If the dude isn't a drunk fool I usually entertain his keenness. On the odd chance you may actually learn something or find a new contact.
Otherwise you've encouraged a budding musician. I won't always just give him a go on my guitar but I don't think I've ever been asked at a gig.

It's never happened...being a 17 year old female scares the shit out of them probably! ?

I don't often get that and it does depend on the type of gig and I know many pro players I wouldn't trust with my guitars. But the golden rule is not if I can see they're obviously three sheets to the wind. Then I'll gently put them off with some excuse like: "We're on a tight schedule - maybe next time". Chances are if there is a "next time" they won't remember it.
Anyway, I have found that most people will do at least one thing that I can learn at least one thing from. It's not down to specific songs either - there is always a new arrangement that will breathe some new life into even the most overplayed piece. Inspiration often comes from strange sources.
I have this one young guy I've often spent time with after gigs demonstrating things he specifically asks about. Last time I saw him, we were setting up before the gig and he asked about my (then) new Carvin nylon string (he plays a Cort nylon). So I picked it up and passed it to him to fiddle on while I carried on setting up the PA. I don't think he stopped grinning the whole night. Later turns out his father owns two of the bigger venues in the area... 8)

Spoken like a pro and that is my whole point. I will always have time for the guys who are geniunely interested and I agree that everybody can learn a trick or 2 from everybody else, but it is the guy who's had a couple of pints too many, with two buddies standing behind him providing confidence that irks me (come to think of it, it happens mostly at gigs in the southern part of JHB...mmm...)

Once after we played a show, as I was packing my fender away into its case, this guy approached me and said "Great show, I love you strat, I also own a strat, can I have a look?"
My fender is a telecaster.

:roflmao:
Sounds similar to the guy posted about in the Gumtree Fails thread. Originally the guitar was posted as a Gibson Les Poul, but he has since seen the light, and it is in fact a Gibson Epiphone Stratocaster.
Except, once again, it's a Tele-style...

I did mobile dikskou for a while. On occasion, at weddings, you'd get the drunk brother/cousin, (you know I love you man) feeling low because he's not the centre of attention, insist on 'playing a set' cause I are was being a DJ as well. I allowed it once at the insistance of the groom, first thing drunk brother does is grab the mic and walk onto the dance floor like he's I Night Fever. Luckilly I was not far and killed it before anyone sustained hearing damage(I hope).

I am left handed ..... and of course not a pro either ...

Hmmmm.... or when people want to sit in on a set. We had a fiddler crash a couple of numbers once, worked out well because he could play the hell out of the violin, and the other night Dave Ferguson asked to sit in... um YES PLEASE. We also had a VERY pushy Canadian fellow a couple of weeks ago who insisted he could play guitar brilliantly, insisted he wanted to play Renesong's beloved Strat during a set. It didn't happen.
But, since we're friendly fellows we asked him to blow harp instead, and he was pretty good at that.
Tim Parr also hinted heavily at using band guitars for a jam with us after one gig... sure it would have been ok but he (and we) were a few down the road, you don't really want to hand over your one and only in that situation. The guitar he did lay his hands on didn't stay in tune, so that didn't work out too well.

I once had a guy look offended because after agreeing to lend him a guitar, I lent him my Pacifica 904 (which the idiot no doubt equated to a beginner's Pacifica 112), which he hadn't noticed, instead of my 25 year old Gibson (heavy and fragile - not a good combo). What a twat. That Pacifica was more guitar than that sob had played outside a shop.
I have let people play that old Gibson - but an older guy in a more controlled situation that I felt ok with. My other guitars I'm pretty happy with lending strangers on a case by case basis. My theory is that they'll pay for the replacement, or I'll take it out of their hide. But, of course, not a pro. So that changes everything.

A guy asked me,
"What acoustic guitar do you have?"
I reply...
"A Larrivee"
With a dumb found look on his face....
he replies..
"I have heard awesome things about Taylors.."
"The same ones Eric Clapton uses"
:-\
I replied.. "Yeah those are pretty cool..." :yup:
OR
play Sweet child O' Mine in front of me and watch me explode................................ Hate is not the word when guys play that screetching intro riff... just dont do it...

The few times I have played gigs (thank you Hellfire!) I have invariably been asked what year my Gibson is. Then I have to explain the relative merits of of Japanese manufacturing compared to that of the US of A. Can get hairy after a few fermented beverages.
Also, this one time at band camp, some guy told me its impossible to build a guitar amplifier and (basically) that I'm lying to him. bah.
I am a pro. Pro-beer baie hard. ?
