I've noticed a few guys have a gripe or two about MK (DSTV 324).
Air your laundry here, I'm keen to hear. I know guys like Quinus have views and reservations but lets see what they are.
I, for one, love the channel and love what they're about. Sure they have their dud moments and not everything is my cup of tea. It must be said though that I have found some really great local talent just from sitting and watching for a few min.
Call it Boksburg MTV, Dutchie VH1, whatever... I think the influence that they've had on the industry in the relatively short time frame that they've been running for is amazing. It's only with the influx of artists trying to get a spot or airplay that the bar is raised. If you've been watching it for a while you'll already notice the difference in the content - less boere orkes and more Seether-like stuff. Artist really need to pull out all the stops in order to get airplay now.

i've never actually watched it,all i've heard is that it's full of afrikaans music and i don't understand afrikaans ???

Your right Spyke, there has definately been a noticable change to the SA music scene (Afr/Eng) since the birth of MK89.
They are on the right track, however I find it stupid that they dont contract local artists to provide music for their shows.
There are a few shows like "AF" etc where its local guys producing the theme music etc. But when I approached them they said
"Oh sorry we dont use local music , etc" weird

I think MK is doing a great job it a good thing for your local music industry and its showing that the industry is also growing. One thing that bothers me is that they will need to filter some of the stuff out and make it there own thing not copy the idea’s from channels like MTV, VH1.

+1 I agree whole heatedly. Good point, it hasn't bothered me as such but it would be a great way to improve it, add character.

I don`t have a problem with mk in essence, it is our own mtv in SA. Very good for promotion for ur band and the tours they do is awesome.
And like all the music channels the good stuff only comes on after 12 at night.Just some of the people`s vids that gets aird that is a bit questionable......

I think another thing it is doing is slowly improving the video production in our country.
A good video is vital to be succcessful, and for a number of years i've been shocked at what has is put out there by our artist. With the recent advent of cheap "computer based" production methods, it's an exciting time for video.
Sure, a few duds get through on MK, but i've already seen a massive jump in quality. Mk is a good thing. When i first started watching MK i was amazed at the quality of the music. It lifted my spirits and frankly made me more proud to be "South African". I realized we are catching up fast, and soon we will be on par with the rest of the world.

I second that Jakjak, does make me feel proud. We have some awesome talent in SA and it went unnoticed for way too long.
One only has to look at Parlotones' I'll be there for you (?) to see how awesome some of the video producers are and the level that can be attained.

I think MK will introduce people to more local bands and music than the local radio stations will.
Sure sometimes they show vids that are not my scene, but have u guys tried watching MTV lately. MTV is either showing some Rap star using samples or some R&B Singer using samples ( or the new trend of these artists is to have a R&B song with a guest rapper or vice versa). Local radio is the same (maybe even worse) with their variety of music choice.
MK was responsible for introducing me to Desmond and the Tutus, Zincplaat and KidOfDoom.
Also, some of the video production coming out of SA is incredible. Without MK nobody else would give a damn.
I think the overall worth of a local channel like MK more than makes up for the 3 chord, stupid lyriced, lets add a techno bass drum songs.

I have nothing against MK and what it does. I think it is a great medium for launching new bands and music.
Like some other people here have mentioned, some of the video production is really sub standard though. Quickly panning
in and out of the frame and adding fancy effects does NOT make a good video. If you are a video producer, please read that sentence again.
The majority of the videos also seem to be copying each other, or is simply a different variant on the same theme.
And the DJ's/Video DJ's or whatever they are called. Aah yes. Them. Seriously. Stop trying so hard to be too cool...
