After my band recorded its single last friday, we are now moving onto music video for the said single. We all have a tight (tight tight) budget. And a friend volunteerd to help us (I know this is generally not a good idea, but he approached us) so we thought, okay, how can we make a cheap music video without it looking cheap. The last thing I want is to have one of those ol' cheapo typical South African video's. My friend is graphic design artist, he is good with editing and camera's etc, and has access to most the stuff we need, but what he/we have in resources we lack in experience.
So please point out some factors we need to consider, and generally anything that can help us. So far, we have thrashed out a basic idea of the theme of the video. Its very simple, it just requires a dark room and good lighting, but we don't want to underestimate anything.

1. Keep it simple.
2. Don't over use common video processing effects in post-production unless it suits your style of music or band vibe.
3. Don't ask band members to do things/look in any way they can't or wouldn't normally (it'll look awkward).
4. Have fun.

very good lighting can make a big difference.
some make up (its very hardcore i know)
maby get someone on board to help with choosing right outfits for the vid. someone with an eye for fashion.
a good layout of what you want to film, and how, and what angle, like a story board.
just play around with some angles and effects, you'll get some good shots if you know what you want.
i mean Die Heuwels fantasties wins best music of the year every year at the SAMA's, and they just drive around with a camera and film whatever it is they do.

The Beasty Boys made groundbreaking low budget videos in the early years, as have many other bands. It all boils down to a strong idea, like that local band on the treadmills. The music was not my style, but I remember the video.

This was a video we shot ourselves last year. We kept things simple by making it a performance video because we were on a tight budget (well, practically no budget) and self-producing the whole shebang. We even built a trolley to move the camera around on for moving shots but that ended up a bit of a disaster because the floor was uneven (we brought carpets just in case but they didn't help much.
