John Kongos, The Flames, (soul outfit from Durban); The Staccatos,(JhBurg) The Invaders (from Uitenhage); The Dealians (East London); Manfred Mann ( ha,.. ha.. he was born here in Durban); The Bats (JhB); McCullagh Workshop (CTown); The Kynd (East London); Dickie Loader and the Blue Jeans (Durban); The A-Cads (JhB); Gene Rockwell and the Falcons (Durban?); etc... You'll find them on youtube.....all these were very popular in the 60's/70's and had a number of hits on the local charts (LM radio and Springbok radio) ?

I saw them a few times at Abalard Sanction in Brixton. My significant other was the siren for Abstract Evil Barbee back then.

John Mair was a monster guitarist. Used to spend sunday evenings at Upstairs in Stellenbosch drooling over his chops.
Used to be the guitarist for Sweatband with Wendy Oldfield.

Awesome band from Cape Town (90s) was PsychoDelli - wish I could find any of their stuff ☹

A great song. IIRC the first local song to go to number one on the Radio 5 chart (the Radio Rats got to number 2 with "ZX Dan"). Recorded on a shoe string when they had no recording contract and little money.

I saw them a few times. Fab live band. They did a gig at Wits in '84 or so that still lingers in my memory (note to Seventhson - I went by myself, there's no law against it).

There's been so many - and there still are. Jamie Scholfield who played with Wired To The Floor and Jennifer Ferguson is a fine player. Johnny Blundell is still around somewhere.

The Radio Rats.... they weren't GREAT players, but they were very tight and rocked quite mightily. Their album "Into The Night We Slide" (reissued) should be remembered as a classic.

Nine were cool - I was just talking to James a few minutes ago. The Usual were all great musicians in that era too.
Not to forget Juluka, Hotline, eVoid, Bright Blue, Sweat Band, Falling Mirror, Lesley Rae Dowling from the '80s.
Further back: Hawk, Freedom's Children, Rabbit, Ballyhoo, McCulley Workshop, Clout.

Plus all the guys that aren't at the top of my head at the moment. There are always good bands and musos around if you just look.

Thanks for mentioning Johnny Fourie...
What an amazing guitarist. I had lessons with him
for 3 years before he retired from teaching the the Technikon Pretoria.
It was very interesting learning from him.

I've heard that both John Machlouchlin (A personal friend of his, I've seen their email correspondence)
and George Benson made comments in the media once or twice that indicated that they believed he
was the best jazz guitarist... I intensely dislike the concept of "the best", but I think it has to be noted
that they gave him the utmost respect.

He was accepted into Chick Corea's electric band only to be booted by the manager because
of the whole apartheid issue... But I'm guessing that I would have never been able to learn from him if
it wasn't for that fact.

Band of Gypsies i grew up with...... King of Clubs in downtown joburg ....Late smoky friday nights and draught beer .....good times damn good times.

I still make an effort to see em when i can and when they play ...last time i saw em was in july ....still rocking .... still living the dream .......
