The Botswana metal scene is truly one of the most interesting things in metal - especially with the ironic association between Black Metal and Nordic white supremacists. It's amazing how our baTswana neighbours have developed their totally unique metal lifestyle.
Yea, always love it when I see a black dude in a Maiden T or black faces at a gig.
Shirts off to our Metal Tribe in Botswana, True Black Metal! \m/
In ... 1989 I think it was, some friends and I drove to Gaborone to see UB40 play a show there. There were lots of South Africans headed for that show, and we imagined that the enthusiasm would be matched by the locals, but it wasn't universal. There was a very good Botswanan reggae-ish band to open the show, but we also bumped into several young men who were complaining along the lines of "if they want to bring a big name out to Botswana, why don't they bring out somebody really worthwhile - like Black Sabbath".
That trip shattered any preconceptions I'd had about which types of people like which types of music.
