A friend of mine showed me a poll that GuitarPlayer magazine (I think) holds every 7 years, where the readers vote for the Best Guitar Solo of all time.
In the last poll in 2004 Hotel California won ( I think once again).
What was supprizing to me is this years winner - Alter Bridge - BlackBird.
Don't get me wrong, I think it is an awesome bit of solo by both Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti. But the best guitar solo ever, I'm not to sure about.
Other songs in the top 10 included, Comfterbly Numb, Hoter California, Sweet Child.
(If some one else saw the same artical they could maybe correct some of my mistakes)
I don't take such polls particularly seriously (they're popularity polls when you get down to it), but in this case I am interested to see that the great mass of humanity can change it's mind and not just keep on voting for a "classic" on the grounds that it's a classic.
It is possible that artists run campaigns to get their fans to flood Guitar Player (or whatever other magazine is running the poll) with votes. So as a measure of excellence these polls are no better than the phone in voting for Idols or Strictly Come Dancing.
