Old Yamaha Acoustic repairs

slyd

I just completed repairs to an old Yamaha acoustic, and thought I'd share a summary thereof . . . . .

The manufacturing of the battery clip has already been posted here:

Excellent Slyd, I wish I was handy with my hands :-[

Far from boring. I always look forward to your restoration threads mate as I find I almost always pick up a handy hint or two, so keep em coming...

bravo .you are a true artist ........or is that artisan .....awesome work .keep posting ....cos in reality it can show us "unhandy" muso's how much we can restore an old guitar if we want to so it's very educational to peeps like me.......... thanks for that

And that makes all the difference in the world ?

Bluddy marvelous Slyd. I'd not have thought it worth saving, but you've excelled in this. :yup:

kapepper

very nice job, impressive!
but djeezes, i have never seen such a dirty and beaten guitar
although my 66 hagstrom came close

Thanks, but I have received MANY DIRTIER and more beaten guitars! ? I just wonder at the neglect >☹

Yeah, I didn't date check the serial#, but the sentimental value timeline dates around there ?

Awesome stuff man. Really enjoyed that. Great work on that binding. Hope the old girl was worth it (how'd she sound?).

Felt light, crisp, . . . . and sounded GREAT! The client said it felt like it was new again ?

??? What did you see that I didn't ?

Gearhead

The trouble with the older Yamaha necks is that they are glued in with epoxy - a neck reset means a heel replacement. I had my Nippon Gakki have major surgery by Andy; He replaced the heel joint with a hide glued Taylor style one that will be able to be steamed out next time.

slyd

Okay, I gotcha.

I think that, with the way the guitar set up, and played so nice, a neck reset would probably not be necessary as yet :-[

But, thanks for the info. I was not aware of that! ???

The (little) amount of saddle protruding above the bridge. The shallow break angle of the treble strings over the saddle is a tell tale sign. Those strings don't press down on the saddle that much, resulting in less transmition of string vibration.

Cutting ramping slots in the bridge for those strings will help, but won't do anything for more saddle protrusion, so ultimately a neck reset is inevitable.

Seems like you know your fretwork - well done.

@zohn - thanks for that info. It certainly makes sense! I shall investigate this issue further for future application ?
