Ditto.
I've only played in one band and we broke up over just something like this and even in my limited experience I figured out a band needs a leader and a strong one.
Someone who's not apologetic about the job. And if there is another alpha male who feels the need to challenge number one - it ussually spells the beginning of the end.
That is not to say the rest should not have a say - it means the leader must know how to utilize input from everyone and how to make every one rize to their potential - not only musically but also in terms of personal dinamics within the band.
And people must stop taking themselves too seriously is situations which (even with the loftiest goals set and a lot of hard work put into it) ends up being a hobby and only a temporary alliance in most cases anyway.
One MUST do it for the fun first and foremost even if your aim is to play Wembley someday.
If one band member has a full time job while another is basically a loafer, this tends to lead to resentment and thus a lot of consideration and communication is evidently needed to prevent these kind of situations.
Another danger sign is fractions from within. We were a four piece and me and the leading man used to be naturally inclined towards a friendship while the drummer and the rhythm guy used to have a lot of shared interests and seemed to click better.
When we split we bassicaly maintained this grouping although the animosity between the two pairs of us has to some degree been laid to rest.
There used t o be a lot of talking behind each other's backs.
If the band has long term goals. a good idea may be to draw up some sort of informal code of conduct that you all can agree upon - nothing too legalistic, but something evrybody may see as beneficial and sticking to the basics.
Oh, and have the girlfriends understand that they're not meant to attend practices!
