Hello. Can anyone recommend a good multimeter. I popped into Communica the other day and they had a heck of a lot of the things. Cheap to dear. And I dont know what I should get. And anyway once I've got it I'm not to sure what I'm going to do with it but they say you need it. I'll find out I guess.
And another thing. What's best for pickup cavities? Paint or tape?
Thanks - Ray

I just bought a cheapie from Midas for 160 bucks, I mainly use multimeters for checking dodgy plugs, dc voltages on various equipment and continuity on cables. (it has a tone which is cool)
what are you looking to use yours for, just guitars?
MikeM
Yea, decide what you're going to use it for. I bought one for R400 or so, that auto adjusts for different voltages, and measures capacitance. Both pretty handy for me, but might be useless for other folk.

if you're using it for guitar related things (pedals and amps too), you'll most likely be using it to measure voltages here and there (AC and DC), resistances and continuity.
as you say they go from cheap to dear (very), like most things in the field of metrology. i would say for your applications you'd be wasting your time with anything under R200 and wasting your money with anything over R600. standard issue for a 1st year engineering student was a UNI-T base model, think it was going for around R350? still have mine and it works well.
good luck
oh and by the way Mike, please could you let me know the details of your multimeter that measures capacitance? did some research on it a while back and i got told that you needed something very particular namely an LCR meter, which range from very expensive to extremely expensive, but it looks like i have been conned.

wow super cool! definitely on my christmas list. frequency meter is cool too, and duty cycle. kudos.
MikeM
Oh wow, that's cool! Did a quick google on it and found nothing ?
Yea man, I'm really happy with it!!

My advice , dont buy the cheapies , go spend a grand and get a good one that measures correctly and will last forever. I bought one in 1997 which i still use today , only on its 3 rd battery. i use it for guitars, cars , bikes , around the house .....cant remember what i paid for it but its worth every cent .......

My advice: buy a cheapy and a very good one. You cannot always get away with using just one when working on amps. Moreover, you will want to take the cheapy to places where stuff gets nicked. The price of the cheapy is irrelevant relative to the expensive one.
I bought a Fluke a couple of years back because I always wanted one. These things last longer than a lifetime and do not get outdated. Therefore, you can pick them up second hand. I bought mine at a Cash Crusaders, there were three more at the time.

So I hear the advice to not buy a cheapy but I think at this time I may go that way because I dont know how much I'm going to use the thing. I think at this stage I'm pretty interested in the one at Tubedepot like Mike's got. Anyone ordering from them anytime?
Ray
so I got this:

Not from there but I got it anyway for around 400 ZAR. It's got the audible continuity thing and capacitance and so forth. Now I must start puttin things together hey. There were others a little more $ and they said they were better but this one was the best color.
