The Challenge November 2011

Renesongs · 2011-11-05T20:19:48+00:00

There is a talent scout in your city looking at metal acts. He is holding auditions at the premier rehearsal facility/soundstage in the area. The label he represents is a complete package in that they are an independent record company with their own in house, state of the art recording studio. They have their own in house management company, promotion and booking department, Publicity and Development departments…….. and they own their own publishing company. They are looking for new Metal acts for their newly established "All Things Metal" category. They need different acts as well as individual players/musicians to assist less experienced acts, in the recording studio. Session musicians. The purpose of the auditions is to find acts/musicians that will complement their roster. This is the first phase and is an elimination process. Acts auditioning can be as small as a single player/singer showing his or her chops or as large a 5 instrument band …..example: 2 guitars, bass, keyboards/synthesizers and drums/percussion. Vocals are allowed. So in addition to the 5 piece band, there can also be a singer if the instrumentalists do not double as vocalists. Harmonies are allowed. The company is insisting on live performances of a single song, no longer than 2 minutes in length. You must be able to demonstrate the essence of the act in this short time period. What they are looking for is attitude, vibe, cohesion etc. Make it past the first round and it moves into Phase 2 where the band has to demonstrate ability on a higher level. Any style of Metal is welcomed. All acts get the same basic stage setup. The drum riser is large enough to accommodate oversized drum kit and percussion setups so huge double kick drum kits with specialty gongs, ethnic drums and percussion etc are welcomed so long as performed by the drummer himself. Guitar and bass players may bring any amp and pedalboard they normally use. They may also use amp and sound modeling devices. Keyboard players may use multiple tiered keyboard setups and the addition of analog keyboards like Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 and the ability to sequence and play samples is permitted. A sound engineer will be provided and the front of house system has a complete effects package including reverb, delay, harmonizer, auto tune, chorus etc. Recap: The genre is Metal. Any style. 2 minute performance max. 1-5 instruments plus a dedicated vocalist if necessary Instrumentalists may provide backup vocals/harmonies Synthesizer samples allowed Drumkit and additional percussion allowed Oh shucks - I forgot to deadline this challenge we started late so lets put the deadline at the very last second of 30 November 2011. There will be plenty of time to vote because traditionally we don't run challenges in December.

Actually, metal requires dialing in and playing precise. ?

Hammeron

Let's not disqualify Iommi because he's not 'Metal'.... :-[

I havent follow this thread the past few days but when I last saw it the was discussion on what metal is.

If I may just say AC/DC and Black Sabbath are not metal anymore. Thats classic rock now.

AC/DC and Black Sabbath were never 'Metal', they were hard rock, just saying.
I like to round it up by calling it "Hard Rock and Heavy Metal" and put it in a steel box and wrap it in a black ribbon!....];0)

Seventhson

So metal for brains.........who are the hot international metal bands in SA right now? Does Metallica even count...Megadeath.......LOL. Those seem like wimpy hard rock bands to me.

Seventhson

metallica, megadeth, slayer, rammstien(saw them live at the dome?

Megadeth has good anti-state songs. I love metal when they sing anti-state songs.

Drumming fake though...

How so? I'm sure he uses triggers, but so does every other drummer in every other genre of music. I've seen live performance videos of them, and he tears it up just as fast and accurately live.

In the video I could see how his snare could be real. But I dont think it is humanly possible to have ones kick drum going that fast.
Triggers make it fake though ?

You have the live video? Id like to see it.

Hammeron

You can be HEAVY without being METAL.......

but you can't be METAL without being HEAVY.

The ultimate METAL band IMO is JUDAS PRIEST.

I don't think you will win defining METAL, I am thinking of doinhg an acoustic metal piece.

Will it be heavy? This topic/Genre is far too open to really define any rules.

But this will make it interesting. I just hope whoever votes does not judge with a one track mind e.g. Comparing to Killswitch engage or Trivium when there are so many types of metal

G-Man

I have just found some free VSTs and impulses that have made me consider flogging my amp for some quick cash, wow. I'm dedicating today to finishing my entry, as of tomorrow morning I begin packing up all my stuff as our roof is coming off and being re-done so it's do or die (or is that do and die? o.O ) for me today. Wish me luck (yeah right ?)

I know what you mean. I am trawling the depths of the late 80's and early 90's for inspiration, so my interpretation of metal will be different to all the new styled stuff that the better players will be submitting, but in theory as long as everyone has an open mind you should be fine Squonk.
