Vox Tonelab vs Boss Gt-8

Anyone tried both? What did you think ?

Both excellent units. I prefer the Vox for tone, but the GT-8 for effects power.

VOX is warmer, better for "traditional" classic rock/blues/pop etc, whereas the GT-8 tends to do better with the more modern stuff & the high-gain amp/distortion sounds
VOX is physically bigger.
VOX has a single preamp valve, BOSS has none.
VOX is a bit more expensive than the GT-8, but close in price to the GT-10

etc etc ...

Mojo JoJoe has owned both - a good referance for you perhaps

+1 for Tonelab if that is the style you are after.
I have owned both units and the Vox really does sound better (to me) when used WITH a guitar amp.
I never used the units straight to desk/PA so I cant give my opinion on that.

The GT-8 is an effect junkies delight. (which of course can be a bad thing when you are trying to cut through the rest of the bands mix.) The Vox seemed to cut through better as well.

Thats a great price for that unit (Desktop model)
considering the behri foot controller is worth about R2300.

I've seen the Tonelab LE selling for around R4500 at a couple of stores in JHB. The new LE is around the size of a GT-8, whereas the older SE (something I GASed over many times in the past and demoed many times but never bought) is much bigger.

I'd agree with everything said here about the units, except that I'll mention the Tonelab LE is a lot better at high gain sounds than the old SE, so at least IMO, it can about match the Boss and Line 6 pedals when it comes to high gain. Not with variety of course, but more on quality of tone.

From a tone point of view I don't think anything else really comes as close to the feel of a real valve amp as the VOX. I've nearly bought one several times as well, but being a stomp box kind of guy I've always veered off at the last minute in favour of a new pedal off eBay. I'd be happy to own one though.
