mtmattan Hey guys, I'm gonna be adding a 3rd pickup to my Tele to get some sweet Strat middle pickup tones - ie the Nashville mod. How does one create a cavity for the extra pickup? I know a lot of Tele's come pre-routed for a 3rd pickup but mine didn't. Thanks!
MikeM If you're asking, I think it'd be best to take it a tech, or get a sharp set of chisels ? However I do have a nashville wiring scheme I've been itching to try ?
mtmattan Haha ya my experience with working with guitars is limited. But it's putting a hole in a piece of wood so it's not rocket science either ?
MikeM While lining it up with a pickguard and not damaging a finish. If you're comfortable with a router, it's a quick job. But it doesn't seem like you are?
Averatu I've done a lot a work with routers, they are really unpredictable. That bit spins at high reps, if you hit a knot in the wood it could run or kick, and that could gouge a nice chunk out of your axe. I would use a bush and template. But I've made a habit to do a test run on a section of scrap wood of the same type of my work piece to see how it cuts, and I'd think you dont have that luxury. Would I take a router to my own guitar? NOT A CHANCE!!!
VellaJ Yeah I would possibly take a router to my Epi Strat, but that's just enlarging the cavity under the 'guard. And I've done some work with a router, building my own axe. But routing a MIA Tele myself? Nooo....
mtmattan Oh ya, this is a MIC Squier Tele, not the MIA. I wouldn't mess with my MIA unless I was 200% confident! ?

AlanRatcliffe Ideally get a tech with experience to do it. If you really want to do it yourself, get lots of practice on scrap wood before you do it (and even that doesn't prepare you for dealing with the finish). Templates are the best way to go and even if you do use one, score the finish first so it chips away neatly where you want it to.
CLIDE take it to a work shop and use a milling machine. or you could use a chisel but thats time consuming and lame! if your looking for a cheap way to enlarge the cavity i suggest using a large hammer?
