I aplogize for starting the thread about the 80's

Squonk

I concede defeat ???

You guys can have your decade back. I didn't realize there were so many 80's freaks out there.
I did probably overlook the fact that most of you are metalheads and the 80's did produce a lot of your heroes.
Petrucci, Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, Gilbert etc

Have pity on an old prog rocker ☹

Manfred-Klose

80's +1 ?

Renesongs

Don't worry Squonk - On 1 January 1980, on stage at a New Wave rock festival at Hemanus I dropped my axe and said F**k this I'm through with rock. I played and listened only to jazz throughout the 80's, (got the scars to prove it) and was lured unwillingly back to rock by the freshly dead SRV, Satriani and Vai in the early 90's ?

\m/ 80's \m/ Rock on!!!!!

Vintage-Vibe

And in 5/10 years time, it will be "90's RULE !" - fashion always repeats itself in 20/30 year cycles ...

Renesongs

+1 VV you know the rules - you are wise beyond your years ?

I thought it was a pretty good discussion actually. I'm and old balie who doesn't listen to much of that metal stuff (though I have a Joe Satriani CD wedging a door open somewhere). If I was younger or listened to kinds of music that I don't I might see the 80s differently (not saying that there's anything wrong with, for EG, Steve Vai, but my listenings and explorations have taken me in different directions the last few years), so I enjoyed seeing comments RE acts that arose during that era.

If I could remember what it was it couldn't have been any good.

Depends on your vantage point Norio. Maybe not by today's standards (many of the bands that started metal barely qualify any more), but by the old standards that put Sabbath, Motorhead, AC/DC, Mountain, Van Halen and many others squarely in metal, it's easily understood.

Here's what appears to be a comprehensive discussion of the origins and philosophy ??? of metal. Don't knock it. Starts in 18th century and takes in Fripp and Sabbath on the way to today. ? I just scanned it quickly - looks like an engaging read!

Wiki also has a nice discussion re some of the more musical aspects:

This is the thing: I have absolutely and emphatically no (and I mean NO) interest in what is called metal today, but in my early days I loved many bands that are now seen as pioneers of metal. The context and definition of "metal" is definitely not the same today as it was in the 70's to late 80s / early 90s.

Thats a really great article, just takes a long time to read. ?
