Vintage strats

So ive been looking around just to see what a proper 1960-1965 strat would go for and now robbing a bank seems like the best way to get one! Does anyone have an original of that era and are there peeps u can buy them from here in SA? Thoughts?

I think the chances of getting your paws on one here are slim. Most of those are taken overseas where they'll be sold for the value that they deserve. There's no market for them in SA.

There are a few personal ones around, absolutely gorgeous axes. But people are unlikely to sell them in a hurry...

I've seen 2 for sale. Both near the R50k mark.

50k isnt that bad i was expecting much worse!! Lets put it this way if u buy it now for 50 it will most likely double in ten to tweny years and they still sound awesome!!
I only know one guy that has a 50-something strat and he wont even let u touch it!!

These vids are of a live gig my tutor did with Tessa Ziegler. Unfortunately they've overdubbed the videos with the actual studio recordings, so some of his playing doesn't look quite right, but this is the actual sound he gets live as well...

This is a late 50's Strat I believe, with Dimarzio pups:

Andreas sometimes has vintage strats and it is possible he could find one for you. He deals only in high-end instruments. Plus it helps that he's a nice guy! 8)

didnt the rosewood necks only come out in the 60's??
So it cant be a 50's strat then!
But i like it! its nice!

thats not a 50's strat... looks like it could be later 60's. But the Decal is all funny, cant get a great look at it... :-\

It can be a '59! Thats when they started glueing rosewood boards on 'caus in '58 the maple necks got discontinued! But u cant realy say!!!

Yeah he was originally under the impression it was early 60's, but when I spoke to him last he said he'd had the serial number checked out and it was late 50's, so you could be right that it's a '59...

I can't be sure, but it looks like a big headstock Strat....? If so, it's post late '64/5

'63 to '65

- Curved rosewood board (thinner one - only introduced in '63)
- 2nd issue clay dots
- While 11 screw 3-ply pickguards were introduced in '59, the position of the screw above the middle p'up is '63 onwards

There is something wrong with the logo - part of the "Fender" is worn away (in the middle), but more importantly, it looks like a CBS era logo ('69 onwards) - it's black with a lighter edge and the "Stratocaster" part is too long and bold for a pre-CBS.

Personally, i thnk someone got confused with this.
Instead of saying its a 50 year old strat, someone misinterpreted it as a 50's strat!
50 years old makes sense to me, 1950's strat on the other hand...

IT stil seems to have the clay dot inlays! When did that go away late '60 something?

Sure there's a market - though not a big one. How do you think guys like Hugh Cumming run a business if there's no market here? Hugh sells mostly Martins but also other high-end brands, mostly acoustics and mostly in this country. Where he does look overseas for buyers is the sort of cream on the top instruments - vintage Les Pauls, Gibson mastertone banjos and so on. The collector's market that such instruments move in is not well developed here.

I got vaguely interested in a very limited edition Breedlove a while back. About R80k's worth. That guitar got sold. So did some other less expensive but not exactly cheap instruments in the same shop.

beautiful guitars ... i hope they locked away safely .as i'm sure they must be worth a wee bit ...... ?......

thats always been a concern of mine with movable assets ....... like art and vintage guitars , i would want them in my home but we all know the more rare or valuable or even just potentially valuable the higher the risk is to have em at home where they risk damage in floods /fires or get stolen and if they stolen even an insurance payout won't replace them , things of beauty

Right, some clarity. The guitar is a late '64 model. The confusion came in with a slight but very important change in the serial numbers. In 1963 Fender introduced the L-serial numbers. As this guitar is a L47*** serial number, this makes it a '64 Strat. If there had been no "L" at the beginning, it would have been 1960.
