anyone heard of Rocksmith ?

You think it will actually improve your playing if you have been playing for 3years+ ?

Ive seen some Tube vids where PPL play the game , looks interesting ....... Ill probably end up buying the game just for Novelty .

I saw a tube vid where a guy was like continuously "Down picking" instead of "alternate picking" and thought ......Geez someone needs enlighten this Oke ?

Anyways , I think its a cool way to attact the Youth to Musical instruments . Just afraid they learn some Bad playing techniques while doing it .

What you guys think ?

A coworker who's interested in learning guitar will be getting it and I will quite likely get it as well. Looks interesting, fun at least. It has scale excercises and the like so I'm sure it'd be useful to intermediate guitar players as well. I think it's worth waiting a bit maybe and seeing if the DLC is worthwhile, as the song list is a bit limited.

I don't think a person is necessarily more likely to gain any bad habits than with any other 'self teaching' method.

The problem imho with these types of games/learning methods is that they are primarily visual/motor whereas I think a better foundation for learning guitar is aural/motor. I prefer to keep my games in the gaming section of my head (which means once a month I'll haul out Dirt 3, next month I'll potter around on Uncharted 3 ? )

I have recently heard via the proverbial GrapeVine that Music Mate will be bringing in Rocksmith.

I think it will improve your playing as it teaches you the song and the difficulty increases as you play.

I cant wait for it to arrive!!

I've had Rocksmith for a few months now. It's fun, but doesn't really work as a teaching aid. Trying to learn a tricky song by just dropping notes out doesn't work at all because it destroys the actual music, if you know what I mean. So you can hear what you should be playing and the visual "track" doesn't sync. You can set the speed and difficultly manually, but only for sections at a time through a monumentally bad, slow user interface. So it's a massive las to actually do that. So ja, it's fun for a bit, and more fun multiplayer, but honestly I'd give it a skip at SA prices (I heard R900 for the PS3 version). They haven't been receptive to user feedback via social media and forums at all, so while I'd normally say "wait for the next version", I don't think it'll fix the two fundamental problems: inability to view a complete tab statically and ability to manually set difficulty and speed at any time. They may be later My 2c: give it a skip.

Saw on Kalahari there is a bundle version for R 1999, and if I am correct it includes an Epiphone Les Paul jr....will this be worth it for the guitar alone or not? I am no expert so asking ?

Hahah I have not seen any of these videos, but I think it's important to notice that alternate picking is one of many picking techniques and not appropriate for all parts. Just because someone is not alternate picking does not necessarily mean that they are doing it wrong.

I played this lunchtime as a woman from my work bought it..........she bought it from the US for Xbox, paid R500 for it.

it's fun........sure as hell beats slinging a plastic lp and pushing buttons.

i saw it in music mate in sandton city t'other day. i'm sure the music stores have shipped in a fair few copies for the xbox, er, xmas rush. it looks a bit more challenging than guitar hero, but there are difficulty levels, just like with any other 'game'. and let's not forget - it is a game.

the difference is that it does use a real guitar. you can buy it as a kit - with an epi lp junior, i think that is right - at a very good price i seem to recall, or boxed if you have a guitar you want to plug into it. so, asked which i would recommend, i'd say go for rocksmith. if i had to sum it up in a short sentence - imagine they turned tab into a game. can it teach you to play guitar? i reckon, sure, up to a point.

and with every bad habit you'd probably pick up along the way, anyway, if you taught yourself...

And there's the catch. As a fairly noob at this guitar thing, I've learnt from the game already, but the ease with which you can fall into bad habits to get the score is alarming.

The game ups the level too quickly for me during a song and eventually I'm playing sloppily just to get to the end of the song with a fair score. If things get too far out of hand I just put the guitar down and hit wrong notes for a round or two till it drops the level back down and then start again, but that's not ideal.

I've had rocksmith on xbox for about a week now and I am enjoying it. Being a more experienced player I find it really entertaining. The user interface is a bit over complicated and I find the game can treat me like an idiot sometimes since it gives me riffs to play that are just way to simple, this puts me off since I can hear the full riff and I automatically want to play the full riff by ear while at the same time the game is telling me to play only two or three notes. The game eventually catches on that it needs to up the difficulty level and then I'm off playing properly again.

It really requires some straight forward active monitors for the sound. If you run the consoles sound out into a fancy surround sound system I find all the DA/AD and processing can create a very annoying lag. But if you keep your sound system simple then it works just fine.

I don't really recommend it for beginners, or not as a sole learning aid at least. You cant beat things like guitar speed trainer or guitar pro or just normal text tabs and your music collection when learning guitar. Rocksmith should be just another tool in a arsenal of weapons when learning guitar for the first time. For me its more for fun than serious guitar playing, and it is allot of fun! Like I said I'm really enjoying it. However I have already formed the habit of not letting the screen tell me what to do, I play the song by ear and feel and that translates into it being played properly on screen.

I recommend getting it to any guitarist but for the newbies don't expect it to turn you into Satriani by the time you've finished the game. To get good, get out the scale book and the metronome and say goodbye to your social life ?

So I just saw this infographic on the interwebz and it got me wondering.

What do you guys that bought and played Rocksmith think of their statistics? Have you had a similar experience? Did it help you to improve at all or is it just a toy and nothing more?

It's not to improve for some extent after practicing, so the fact that 95% of people improved is probably because they just PRACTICED.

I say anything that gets people picking up a musical instrument is a good thing...............

I have it... find it pretty cool...
BUT... the lag irritates me...I've already put the audio in through RCA cables and not through the HDMI, but there is still a little lag.

Probably sad to admit, but I got into guitar playing because of Rocksmith ?

I saw it and thought to myself I always wanted to learn guitar, so maybe this will be a way to get into it. So I got the game and my electro-acoustic Epiphone. Later got an amp and my Vintage electric guit. Haven't stopped playing guitar since. But I practice and learn TAB outside the game as well. My aim is to become a guitarist/musician, not a Rocksmith game player.

Before Rocksmith, about 7 months ago, I have not touched a guitar. Now, from memory, I can play the first part of The Final Countdown. Still working on the solo, it is pretty hectic for a noob like me, lol!

Also mastered a few of the easier songs. I also seem to now find I can see how some scales are used in some of the songs. I am actually experimenting to see what else might work in that song and so on.

So Rocksmith for me has been great, but I strongly advise to learn outside of it as well. It is just another tool on the way to hopefully becoming someone that can make music with a guitar. ?

I have played the scale runner and those other challenge games a bit also... they are tough as you get higher and higher level because they use more and more of the fretboard and more and more strings and more and more speed...lol
