+1
yes i shop around a lot for 2nd hand gear and especially interested in fender ....... i's say 7 - 10 K for a clean 2nd hand usa strat if you paying 12 K it must be very special ........ cos in this year i bought a brand new out of the box tele usa american standard from a music store , for 11K...my price (retail /ticket price was 19k if i recall but they super negotiable ) .......and yes it was a crazy deal but i asked and got it anyway stores seem desparate for upper mid to higher end sales..... .
so if you into double figures for a 2nd hand one either make sure it's something more than just a good /well kept usa standard strat (and there are some beauts out there worth the double figures ).....but remember buying new means a guarentee .......
also , i'm still amazed at how gullable some people are when buying 2nd hand and they fail to negotiate at all .......... most sellers ,unless the price is clearly marked to sell quick(which if you know your product you will pick up)...so a usa standard strat for 7K- 8 K is a deal i'd not negotiate on but if the seller wanted 9 - 12K i'd offer much less ........ cos in reality the sellers ussually add on a chunk of change to negotiate with and after the discount still get their price they'd be happy with .... so that 9 K strat on gumtree could sell for 7.5 if no one else is showing much interest ......cos i've found the average seller on gumtree (barre the collectors) are wanting a quick sale cos they either gassing for something else musically which they want asap or desperately need the cash for a life emergency (which can hit us all)
and the 2nd hand market for gear selling at more than 7K is pretty slow .....and for items into double figures it's even slower ...so offers are ussually welcomed by the seller
also check out the smaller guitar stores in out of the way places....(the ones tucked away in the suburbs) .cos they often hold 2nd hand stock (which they buy in or trade in fairly cheaply) and are negotiable again cos they can't afford to just hold stock for years like the bigger stores can ......
anyway sure you know all this........ and good luck with the hunt and purchase
