IceCreamMan wroteobviously a paid up member of the NRA eh.
Well, yes of course. ? 8) For a year at a time though, not a life member as it is too much outlay at one time for me.

sjo... interesting... How the hell do you get a license for one of those things?
No license per se required. It is my right under the 2nd Amendment to keep and bear arms. However, you do have to have a background check...police, FBI, BATF, Homeland Security or whatever they are called now. They have to make sure you are not an ex-felon, mental patient, wife beater, druggie etc etc. So the gun store holds the firearm for 10 days while that paperwork goes through, while they check all your records. They get your drivers license number and fingerprint you at the store etc. In the US your drivers license is your main ID. It has a tape stripe on the back with all your data......the cop can swipe it in his car and get all your records. Anyway, as far as the whole process, you can bet there is some data bank somewhere of all the registered gun owners. Not the zombies of course. The criminals don't abide by all that. I don't care....I am a law abiding citizen, don't do drugs, never had a felony or even a misdemeanor......my nose is clean and my house is in order.
RuanR wroteand what use do you have for it?
Zombies!! They are coming!!! ?
I like going to the range and plinking....shooting at targets, punching paper, putting up stuff like pop cans, water bottles, watermelons etc......sometimes you can find a grocer who is getting rid of over ripe melons etc. Bio-degradable is nice 'cos you don't have to pick it up.
I have 5 handguns....... Ruger Mk IV .22 caliber (assassins choice..... ? ?) a Taurus .38 Special concealed carry with boot grips and a bobbed hammer, a Ruger P85 9mm, a Colt Trooper MkV .357 Magnum and a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum. I used to have a Norinco SKS which is an AK-47 variant but I got rid of it.
So all my weapons of course double as defensive tools, to protect my home, my family, myself. But the fun is in the sport of it, going out with friends to the range and testing my skills.
RuanR wroteoh and AAMOI what is the price range of one of those things? (thousands? tens of thousands? hundreds..?)
The AR was on sale for $1150 ...normally right around $1300. With tax and all the gun shop fees it was about $1280. The scope was only $125 and the mount was $75 I also bought some accessories so at this point I have $1500 or so into it. Direct conversion is R12,250.00. Not bad really for a top shelf rifle. You can get less expensive AR's for around $700 but I would not touch them. LMT makes for the military and police first and foremost.....so they have to have a good name for reliability.
California is a VERY unfriendly State towards guns and gun owners. They have all sorts of restrictions and laws and they make it very difficult for law abiding citizens to own firearms. They definitely do not like "assault rifles" and there was a ban on them for many years. That expired and was not put back into law.......probably thanks to the NRA. The NRA is working hard to break down the many remaining restrictions and laws....they believe there should be no restrictions at all......none. That is another reason I got my AR.....in case the state outlaw's sales of them again. At least then I will have mine.
Anyway.....it is a for fun thing with a primary purpose of being something decent to have if ever the SHTF. Handguns are okay for the home and at some point I might get a shotgun also. For any other scenario you need something a bit more aggressive. Hopefully after I am gone, or even before.....the weapon get's sold and legally transferred into the new owners name and I never had to use it for anything but plinking and punching holes in paper targets.
Ammunition starts at around $6-$8 for a box of 20rds and goes up from there. The premium stuff gets expensive. My plan is to shoot the FMJ Remington UMC .223 and Federal American Eagle .223, which is less expensive ammo-for general plinking. For serious work with the scope I will use better quality FMJ 5.56 ammo, and load it with JHP for defensive. I will probably keep some steel core as well. You are not allowed to shoot it at most ranges in California as it can start fires by causing a spark if the steel core strikes anything hard. So ammo.....around 30c-40c a round. What is that? About R2.50 per round?
Because ammo is so expensive, I want to buy a .22LR conversion kit for the LMT. They are about $150 and they drop in in seconds. They will save one
so much in ammo costs while still allowing the shooter to practice with the same firearm as far as feel, weight, balance etc. Only the recoil is different. Like zero with .22LR.
I have a question. Without getting political of course. Is it still easy to get a firearm in SA? Are AR's available?
