The new PA system

I've been scrounging around for ages for a set up that we can use for jam sessions and I'm less than a month away from breaking ground on a dedicated jam room where we can practice and make some noise, any time of the day.

This may not be a multi million watt set up, but for our needs, it's perfect. I played my amp tonight at 5-6 which is where we usually jam and this thing has no problems keeping up with the vocals. The total wattage of the system is 120watts and 300watts from the yamaha would of been overkill, not to mention almost double the cost.

Even the mic isn't bad.............

- PA/mixer, speakers,mic and cables cost me R3200
- speaker stands were R600 for the two
- mic stand R150

I got the stuff brand new.......music mate in faerie glen - Pretoria. I've been looking for ages and people are selling similar items as this for R5000 used condition, so I took the plunge.

WE are looking at PA systems currently and man A) we dont wanna spend huge amounts of cash (although we would love to) and B) its gotta do the trick.

I see the wharfedale systems are well priced but its expensive if it dont do the trick

Oh it'll work alright. Like I said with our drummer playing, we have to crank onto 5-6 on our amps, this thing can drown out me playing on 5-6 easily. Should be able to give some proper feedback after our next jam in about 2 weeks time.

A lot of people snuff at wharfdale, but for that price and for what it can do, I can't fault it. It's almost 1/2 the price of the stagepas and R1500 cheaper than the samson (which was going to be my second choice).

We've got a similar setup in our new prac room (pics to follow soon 8)). A smallish mixer/amp and a few wedge monitors for each of the guys. You don't really need much more than that for practicing i reckon. Basically something to amplify the vocals so you can hear them over the drummer :?

Keep us posted with the room build.

Cheers...........yup the powered mixer was mainly for the vocals, but given the fact that we're going to have about 4 times more space to play in, it's nice to have the option of plugging in everyone to the mixer.

The room build will be a great thread and probably as good as it'll get for me.....should be 2 weeks from start to finish. With some smooth custom wiring under the floor and custom moveable dampening details.

sounds like a plan, I can't wait to start, but it seems that I'm going to be required by law to put in a window.....7 weeks delay because of this.

I'm looking at the "room within a room" idea as I have quite a bit of space. 6x6m.

I have a second architect in at the moment who thinks that the first one is trying to get us to add more because he's not making much money on a 5.5 x 4m bathroom and a 6 x 6 jam room and he's never heard of this BS law that states that we have to have a window......either way I should find out on friday.

We also changed the plans from a lein to roof to a concrete ceiling and suspended false ceiling and loads of bass traps.

Well the verdict is in, I fired the 1st architect, the dildo told the council that my structure falls under............................and get this.....................a building of bunker type construction.......................LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL...

I'll be starting a new thread on Monday with the space and the initial plans as well as my custom touches.............

actually - in most municipalities there will be regulations governing the size of a window in relation to the size of the floor space.. there has to be a certain amount of ventilation if its going to be above a certain size and listed as a 'room'..

we have a semi enclosed deck - 3 sides and a roof, and on the one wall, i have a non-opening window... we wanted to close in the 4th wall with sliding doors which would essentially make it a "witch room , or sun room, but the non-opening window would have to be changed to an opening window and larger than i currently have, in order to pass municipal scrutiny, so i would venture to say its not BS unfortunately.

Well the second architect just called me and stated that I have to get special permission to build a structure without a window, so to save all the aggro and the additional R3500 it's going to be easier to just fit a window and then make some kick ass kind of sponge fill that can be removed and then fit a trap door over that to get it as air tight as possible.

He said that the original paperwork for the room was wrong that the first architect filed, as the false floor meant that the concrete floor would have to be lower than normal and that would leave about 15cm between the door opening and the base and the inspector didn't like that idea.

I could of had these plans approved ages ago, but my lack of knowledge and my first achitects lack of following up on things has cost me. The original plan was to build in March..........now it looks like it'll be in the new year as I don't want the builders to start in Dec.

just had a jam with the new PA............makes a lot of difference being able to mix the rythmn and bass and vox all in one. The Wharfdale PA500 is perfect. I can recommend this to anyone who wants a small PA. I swear that this could do small pubs.

Great buy, for the money, I can't fault it.

On another note you can hook up the exercise bike to a generator to run the PA... give the singer something to do ?
