I want to split out audio from and HDMI signal - any ideas

Current equipment
1) HDMI DVD home theatre system that has 5 speakers and an HDMI output.
2) I can switch audio from the speakers to HDMI
3) TV with multiple HDMI inputs and RCA stereo output
4) Hi-fi system with RCA inputs.

So what I do with this at present is
1) Divert DVD audio to HDMI
2) This takes the sound to the TV but
3) I can take the audio feed from the TV to the Hi-fi via RCA BUT
4) There is a delay in the audio somewhere. Not great, but if I have the volume up on the TV and the hi-fi it's like the hi-fi is an echo to the TV. I don't have both volumes turned up, but the picture on the TV and the sound coming from the Hi-fi are very slightly out of sync. (there is a video/audio sync setting on the DVD player, but this just makes the delay longer)

What I would like to do is have a little box that will accept the HDMI from the DVD, pass the HDMI video onto the TV but split the audio off into some analog format that can be fed into the Hi-fi.

Any ideas?

Does your home theatre system not have component out? If it does then you just peel off (or use a separate cable) for the audio and you can send it straight to the hi-fi.
There is little or no difference in picture between HDMI and Component cables, in fact I get a better picture (better blacks) from component on blu-ray to HDTV than HDMI.

Component video out, but the only audio outputs are the speakers or HDMI. So I'd still need a box to supply the audio as an analog signal on RCA.

Sony sells a HDMI to component lead for PS3... that splits off the audio nicely. Musica stocks them I think, but most PS3 selling places should have (or get online).

Ja... I saw those for sell, but some sellers say there is no signal conversion (which makes sense) and that you still need a DAC somewhere in the line.

Experts cannot agree. But the price of the cable can't be much, and so it might be worth a try.

Bah! But this sounds like lots of things to turn on and more remotes to juggle. Time to sell some body parts and get a whole new system put in...

What am I not getting?

I have several setups in my house.

So take the BluRay DVD player or the Sony Playstation.

Connected by HDMI, as well as Optical Toslink, to the receiver.

If I do not want surround, I do not turn on the receiver and the sound goes through the HDMI to the TV.

If I do not want regular stereo off the TV I drop the TV volume to zero and fire up the surround receiver. This will require going into settings and deselecting HDMI and picking Optical....I just leave my PS3 set to Optical always. Truth be told I forget how I setup the DVD player. It will do both and I do not need to change anything......just turn the receiver on or leave the TV volume up.

The delay that you get when you play both audio sources together is awful, I agree 100%.........it's like kicking on a chorus pedal. It seems the same as listening to exactly the same show on two different TV's in two different rooms say 30 feet apart. Why would you want both sources on anyway?

Just use the Toslink (optical I/O) or S/PDIF and you should be good to go yeah?

Or am I missing something staring me in the face? ?
