Hi all
Most of you would probably have read about me NOT getting the Mesa Road King I was after. In that thread some people expressed their opinions that that amp is not the be all and end all. I am asking for opinions here on getting the sound I am after.
The music I want to make falls in the modern rock/metal category - bands like Chevelle, Alter Bridge, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, Evans Blue, Tool - you probably get the picture by now.
I have a Line6 Spider Valve 212 MkI that I bought for the Recto model, but playing it side by side to my Fender it sounds so thin and small ...
Maybe all I need is the right distortion pedal for the Fender? I've tried the GT6 and didn't like it.

I'd say try and get a hold of some distortion and fuzz pedals, see how they work on your rig. Invite folks over for a kuier, best way to test ?

hey trippp with 3 p's
i have a collection of overdrive/distortion pedals you can try out.
you still got my number ?

Youtube is a terrible place to make final decisions on an amp, but it's really not a bad place for quickly exploring possibilities. Here's a vid I found a while back - the tones they're using are probably heavier than what you want, but the amplifier list is pretty much what you'd be looking for.
(Make sure you double click the video, so that you can go to the youtube site and see the list of amps directly below the video - also change to 720p for better sound quality)

Hi ParadoximA
I'm subscribed to Ola's yotube channel. Anything he does sounds friggin amazing ?
That's what is leading me to believe a lot of the "sound" I am after I will never find directly from the amp, but from production on an album ... *sigh*

I played my SV112 MKI and Mesa dual rec side by side and after tweaking (of course) I could get them to sound almost identical at normal gigging volume. At higher volumes the Mesa obviously takes over with authority but at normal volumes there's not much in it. (Granted, the Mesa is under-driven at these lower volumes...) I've subsequently sold both and picked up a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Bluesman for the excellent cleans enhanced by the 6L6's and Vintage 30 and I'm getting a Wampler Triple Wreck for the Mesa tone I love so much.
Mesa's are simply great and worth the cash if you can afford it and you need that amount of power/volume. Over-engineered tonal monsters! My Dual Rec was capable of producing a myriad of quality tones from Fender-like cleans to Marshally crunch to full bore Rectifier high-gain tones without the fizz. The Road Kind is very flexible but a nightmare to set-up and maintain... I prefer the Dual Rec and Roadster combo personally.
The only pedal that I know can produce authentic Mesa Rectifier tones in a single pedal is the Wampler Triple Wreck imo. At $270 its not cheap... Great pedal but you need to run it through a very clean channel such as most Fender Amps with 6L6 power tubes will provide.
P.S. You should be running your SV at minimum 1/4 volume (preferably higher) to get decent tones after re-eq'ing... They don't sound good at lower volumes. You need to push those tubes as much as possible. (I've had 3 SV's...)

If you're looking at shelling out over 20k, I'd say go spend a day in the expensive room of Music Connection. A mate of mine flew me up to Joburg to assist him in choosing an amp, so we literally spent the day testing out about 15 amps. Luckily, I'd given Dan Patlansky a ring and asked him to join us, so we got some good service. My friend ended up getting an AC30HWx, an amp he really didn't expect he'd like. So go and spend a day with someone who knows what you want, and sift through the endless options ?

They on there way to South Africa...
Tokai SA is bringing them...
PM him
I am pretty keen to see this thing when it arrives..
If it profiles my 2 Swarts to the tee, I am going to be slightly touched for shelling out R40k for the real thing ? Not really...

Ag Brent, then we have an exucse to get stereo rigs ?

Of course.. Doing that already ?
Here are better videos of the Kemper, impressive none the less..

>☹ Why I outta!!
I think that'd actually be the answer... Have your go to golden amp, and this Kempler as a playmate for it! But enough with me being off topic!!
Trippp
I'd love to test the Kemper. From what I've seen on the interwebs is they'll be cheaper than the Mesa and the Axe FX II.
Any idea when they'll arive?
MikeM
Mr Tokai would be able to give you a solid date, but I'd guess around Xmas perhaps or early new year?

My "demo" KPA arrives tomorrow.
World wide release scheduled for end October...we'll have them here before the USA gets them and a week after the release. ?
That's all I'm allowed to say here.

I was going to say......
Dude. You have a 2x12 Spider Valve. You should be able to get some killer sounds out of that :-\
theantirockstar
Try Blackstar. Seriously good amps for the money. the ISF feature is worth the money alone, it allows you to shape your tone from classic British tones (think Marshall) to modern USA (think Boogie) and everything inbetween.

My advice is to drop the modelling kit. I have a gt8 which I used with a crate amp and I could never get tone I really liked. Now I've starred over with a simple hughes and kettner 25th anniversary tube and decent pedals.
What I've found is that instead of trying to model a bands sound I've got my own voice in which to play the songs I've always loved.

Hey bud, so u not digging the spider?
A pity, i have been interested in getting a spider valve purely for high gain studio tones? Have u been dissapointed with the distortion sounds on the beast?
Would like to hear your feedback!

My 2c, just get a dual rec, i got one to replace my mesa express 5:50 head and it does all those tones perfectly! Really amazing amp.
If you don't need MASSES of head room, go for the express 5:50 head with a 2x12 cab. There is only one in the country, my old one, which is still at music connection (got a bit of wear at the store but just cosmetic last I checked).
To be honest its quicker and easier to dial in huge lead tones from that head than a dual rec and it should be reasonably affordable.
That said, Mesa is awesome.

Man ... this is a strange journey. I tested the Express 5:25, Dual Rec and the Spider Valve 112 on the same day - unfortunately not at volumes approaching band usage volumes. For what I could hear then, the high gain sounds was good enough and the other sounds I considered as extra and bonus.
I didn't buy the 112, but went for the 212 when I saw they had one. (Bigger is better ... right? ?). Before I've ever used the amp in a gig situation, my band ceased to exist, so the amp has been sitting around for 2-3 years.
I can't explain what my problem with it is at this stage - hell , it might be my guitar, it might be my playing ... can anyone point me to a good psychiatrist ? ☹
