Hey ZuluBlues, did you ever install those Rocksongs? Thinking of replacing the bridge pickup of my Ibanez Roadstar with either the IV or the Rocksongs.
Would be interesting to hear what your views are regarding the Rocksongs if you had them installed already.

I've gotta be the world's worst procrastinator!! I have since heard the sound clips on the Tonerider home site aned change dmy mind to the AlNiCo IV pups. But, of course, I want them with the nickel covers which are currently out of stock. Either I wait for new stock to come in or I may go for the Zebras.

As soon as I have fitted them I'll be back with a review.

Hi All, sorry it has taken so long, but I have finally wired in the AlNiCo 4 Toneriders. I got the Zebras by the way. I am a little dissapointed in the tonal range. For once I find the range too great. What I mean is the bass is too bassy and the treble too high. There seems to be a huge variation across the strings, no matter what tone setting or pickup I select.

Has anyone else had this experience? I am hoping that a cap change will fix this, but to the best of my knowledge (limited!), a cap change will be a linear change across the frequency range. Now, how do I lighten the bass and deepen the treble????

The output seems to be quite a bit higher than the DiMarzios that came out of the guitar, now if I can just bring the tone back to a more balanced sound I'll be a happy chappy. HELP!!

I'd give it a few days. Also, the increased treble may be what you want in a band setting, for being heard, most people will play their amps much too dark for band playing, at home. The full range is exactly what those old PAFs had and what makes them good. Have you tried tweaking your amp?

+1. Takes a little while to adjust to new pickups and really listen to them. Can't expect them to sound their best using the settings tweaked for a different set of pups.

+1 again. Always set your amp up from scratch with a different set of pups.

Also, Have you set your pickup and polepiece heights yet?

but was also thinking (I know I shouldn't), maybe the pups are just so much clearer than you are currently used to ?
Keep playing, I'm sure you'll get used to the clear tonal range ?!

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. I'll hang in there and see if I become accustomed to the tonal range. It was just that it is so different to my other guitars that I initially thought "Whoa, there is something amiss here!". I'll also look at my amp ( Blues Junior) settings. I normally play with the pre amp at 9 or 10 and the main volume at 3 or 4 with a scooped EQ. I'll play with this and maybe turn down the pre amp and clean up the sound a little.

Man, Slyd, that boy sure plays a mean riff. Do I see G4 in the near future?? His economy left hand movement is brilliant.

To be fair, a Super Distortion and a PAF Pro are a very hot combo and very different to a more classic rock combo like the AIVs. It's quite a paradigm shift, but well worth spending the time exploring, even if it's so you end up knowing you are more of a high-output pickup person than a classic one. And if you do manage to get a handle on it, you've added another set of tones to your arsenal.

Lower powered pickups are also a lot more unforgiving of your playing accuracy and dynamics, but if you do learn to control them better, you will end up a better player overall.

Thanks for the comments. I'll persevere with them and try a few amp setting changes. You are quite correct about the playing inaccuracies. I noticed that as soon as I played them for the first time. It certainly makes you pay more attention!
