So I've decided that I would love to get a Gibson ES 335. The sound really appeals to me.
Unfortunately the price tag does not, so I was wondering what good quality copies one can find.
I tried a beautiful Tokai at TOMS Sandton. It sounded amazing but at 17K it too was a bit far out of my reach.

Any ideas?
Ye I do want to try the ES-60. The Epiphone Dot does not appeal to me after watching some youtube vids. Any experience with Ibanez Artcores, Arias ect?

There is a forum member ( I will try and find his ad ) who has a Gibson ES-335 for sale at around R18k....why not try and strike a deal with him?

Offer him a few installments....you're not gonna be that happy with any ol' 335 ?
At Mediatech I encountered the Vintage VSA555. Fantastic 335-type guitar, gorgeous too (black with gold hardware...). IIRC it retails at about R6k. Honestly, if I had the money at the mo, I'd get one ?

I was wondering if they made one. I've tried the Vintage strats and teles and apart from the horrible paint jobs I was pretty impressed. I'll have a look.
I have a MIC ES-60 and Im very happy with it. Pm CDee hes gonna be selling his ES-60 which comes with the Premium Tokai MKII Pickups, the ones on the more expensive Tokai models (he bought them separately) and as far as I know the guitar is as good as new ?

Cool man. I remember you had it on the market a while ago. Change of heart?
The cheapest made-in-Japan Tokai ES should not cost that much. It should be selling for about R14K with discount at most. That would be the ES135. Which model did TOMS have? Did the price they quoted you factor in discount?

I'm not sure and I hadn't asked for the real price yet. I generally get a good deal at TOMS though. I suspect it may have been an ES-155 but I am not sure. It was cherry color.

Realised I didnt need the money, so I kept the guitar ? Was a happy day ?
Right. That makes sense. So ask them for a quote on a 135 in cherry (only diff is it has a plain top - which 95% of the original 335s did too) - after discount, and see if it's a more attractive price. If Lance has one (and he probably does) they'll be able to get you a quote.

The MIJ Tokai ESs aren't cheap, but the flip-side is that they're all pro-quality guitars, very reminiscent of 1950s/1960s 335s, so you'll never need to upgrade the guitar as you'll tend to do with an ES60/ Epi Dot/ Artcore.
