On another note, Les Pauls can be perfect jazz guitars. But then all Les Pauls are not created equal.
? there's a funny story about a jazz dude who wanted to buy a les paul to play traditional jazz on and the salesman said ...hey dude who plays traditional jazz on a les paul??? and the dude said well for one 'les Paul" !!!!!
a lot of les pauls are used in fusion jazz .... where they use that fat solo tone .
but very few les pauls are used in traditional jazz (the old 30's / 40's style) most will use ES175/ES330/ES355 or some archtop or hollow body ....... and of course there's always exception to every rule......
and as i saw yet again yesterday there's an "instant jazz mojo" in an archtop/hollowbody , it just sounds old 40's
it's been explained as it's got to do with the lack of a solid body so the vibrations bounce about more and the tone gets quite complex and even wooly but in a good way ...which is perfect for traditional jazz (note i'm not saying ALL jazz it's too broad a genre )
but a les paul or strat is not ideal if you want that specific traditional jazz tone ........ i often use my tele to do jazz gigs with but it's a modern jazz sound and very usable but i can't with any amount of tweaking make it sound anthing like either of my hollow bodied guitars
guess same as i wouldn't pick an ES175 to play metal on sure you could do it but just not ideal
and on a personal note ....... the les paul i tried was a 2nd hand standard from 80's they wanting 12K for it(possibly less with a debate) and it looks awesome in a transparent natural clear finish where one see's the wood ...... just on looks i'd buy it ....
thats why i picked it up and was playing it ? and the feel of the neck was incredible ...... but yes too heavy for me (thats a personal gripe, i can't deal with heavy guitars)
and then in fact i was expecting at least some "jazz tone magic" from the neck pup with the tone rolled back (it was palyed thru a fender deluxe reverb valve amp so no excuses from bad amp and i used same amp on the hofner ) i had previously obsessed about a les paul studio that a friend would never sell to me who's neck pup was ideal tone for old jazz ..so i kinda expected that ...... or even more
.but afraid as you say singemonkey
But then all Les Pauls are not created equal.
so i was bitterly dissapointed......it was harsh and not that expected fat round gibson tone .....and i would find it unusable for what i do ......
pity cos it looked delicious ..... if it sounded great i woulda been tempted and tried to negotiate a hint of a better price cos if the price was a "K "or two lower i'd have bought it yesterday ...just to have .....and as i say that "look alone " of a natural wood and gig worn (cos it's been played )is to to obsess over ? but i'd insist on a yummy rich warm /round neck pup tone in the deal
