HUGE coincidence as I was going to make the exact same post this morning...
As I have always heard, and as Alan and Keira and others have said, you should change your strings regularly "too maintain the best tone"..... some 'pro's' changing weekly when they gig..
BUT... and this is a big BUT................ if tone is very subject to the listener, who can say that the tone from older strings is "wrong"... ? ? ?
as mentioned elsewhere, i got a guitar back from being set up yesterday with brand new shiny strings on it.. I bought it not long ago, 2nd hand with older strings on it.. they were not rusty or anything, but for sure not new.. and i simply LOVED the tone from the guitar...
amps and all were tuned into the tone i want from the guitar with those strings........ now, with new strings, 'that' tone is gone.. I do not want to start fiddling with the amp settings, so will wait until the strings are worn in some more... to see if the tone comes back.
so really, barring bits of rust and dust flying off old strings, why cant one keep them on and get the tone you want from old strings as opposed to new ones, is it wrong???
obviously this applies to electric guitars only, as acoustics with old strings will get better sound from a wet shoelace across the sound hole, than strings older than 2 months or so.
well in reply to stephans post , yes tone is personal..... and if you like the sound of worn out strings thats definitely no problem cos lets be honest it's your sound ..........
however and i can only speak from my personal experience.......... so again it's coming from the pro muso position ............where to me as i use 9's on my tele the risk of older strings is they can break and also that they lose their "sparkle" and i also find older strings seem to sound like they need their intonation set ....... (i have no scientific proof that old strings lose intonation...i'm not too technical ....but it sound to me that newer strings are better with intonation maybe it;'s just psycosymatic ? )
but personally (and each to their own here) i like the tone of 2 day old strings the best ....if i ever do a studio session i always replace the strings 48hrs before the session ....... strings right after they put on new are still too unstable and overly bright .......
and for times when i work lots of gigs ....... like i did at sun city when i did 8-9 gigs a week plus rehearsals for 9 months ... ..i would find if i changed strings every week i'd never break a string onstage and the tone and intonation sounded great to my liking ........... cos a broken string when you pro is a major issue...... i used to always carry 2 guitars because of that but now i find if i change strings religeously every week i never (or lets say reduce breaking strings to about 1 in 100 chance of snapping a string) so i don't need a 2nd guitar ( but always carry a few sets of new strings cos one can nevere say never) but i found if i played a lot and left strings on for 2 weeks the risk of a break rose dramatically to say 1 in 20 so that risk is not worth it for someone gigging
but like i said when i started this post ...each to his/her own tastes
