I recently bought a secondhand Samick Les Paul that was in a bit of a state and that I wanted to fix up.
Someone had painted the binding black in the past so I wanted to remove that and see what I could do. Unfortunately, after going the paint stripper route, some of the body paint came off where it had obviously been touched up before – it was one of those, “Oh well, I’ll now just have to refinish the whole guitar,” moments. With a big smile… ?
So I put some paint stripper on overnight and started scraping off the paint the following day. I did the front of the guitar and stepped back and saw this.
It took my breath away. I love the look of it. The colours, the relic’ness, the harshness of the finish… so it got me thinking… should I leave it this way?
This is what the back looks like.
Sooooooo… what do you guys think? And if I do decide to leave it this way, how could I finish it for protection? I was thinking of a couple coats of clear matte finish by spray.
