Where can I buy vinyl (like Tolex)

OK, I reckon I don't necessarily need Tolex specifically but does anyone know where can I buy a cheaper sort of vinyl similar to Tolex?

last time i suggested material shops, i was shot down.
But check them out and decide if thats what you want!
Also, there are more heavy duty vinyls available, they're obviously more expensive!

I've got this idea of making a case for my Ukulele (something like this http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/products/banjomanduke/ukulele/TUC.html) so it really doesn't have to be the very highest quality of vinyl. I haven't really calculated yet how much I'd need but it would probably not be much more than 2 meters squared.

Norman86, the fabric shop sounds like a good idea, I'll look around. I can't imagine that just any fabric shop will stock vinyl but it's worth keeping an eye out for.

if you got friends or family in cape town ask then to go check out Bagrams for you in salt river/ woodstock area... its a shop that has everything that everyone else does not have.

almost certain to find something useable there.

I found my vinyl at an indian supplier in brooklyn.......I got 4 running meters and it was R40 a meter.........damn thick stuff with a backing as well........very close looking to Tolex. It should wrap my 412 cab just fine.

Wow, that sounds great. @R40 a meter I assume the Brooklyn you're referring to is the one in Pta, not New York? ?

Any chance you could remember where exactly this supplier is or any contact details?

bingo........they're a small haberdashery in the brooklyn centre, but they have some very specialised stuff. I think that they are the only haberdashery in the centre, so it should be easy to track down. I went passed METRO also and they had something very similar used for covering office tables. So material shops would be my first choice.

Deef, ALL material shops have vinyl! if you're unsure, give whichever is closest to you a call first!
But its pretty easy to get hold of! ?

Yep, I saw some just yesterday in our local fabric store here in Durbs. R40 a running meter by 1.4 wide.

there are tons of places, if you go to the Doornfontien area... General Upholstery Suppliers (Pty) Ltd Pritchard Street, Johannesburg 2001
011 337 4947, you find many around there just ask around

My dad was in this business for many years, you get two types of vinyl one with a stretch -back mainly used for seating and the like, although strong will scuff easy and tear. and one that is more hardy that does not stretch much used for tawny covers harder wearing which I would use on cases and amps that would with stand the abuse.

Of course if you ventured on the wild side you could get designer ostrich, alligator or snake skin vinyl, these supplier are in the Kramerville side jhb -
