  • TJ's October 6th - the evidence for the prosecution M'Lud

There's more than meets the eye to running such a show. I had about 4 weeks to contact artists, agree a schedule and so on. I built up a little list of technical requirements for each act (which included whether the artist wanted to stand or sit to play) so that we wouldn't get any surprises on the night.

Crew and artists started arriving at about 5pm and the sound system was assembled and, for this gig, Keira set up her performance space. (How she gets all that in a Tazz is one of life's intriguing mysteries)

The show was to kick off at 20:00 (no "close enough for rock 'n roll", we had 6 acts and so we had to be prompt in order to give each of them time to give a decent performance). Just before 8 I took a shot of the crowd. Some of you may spot yourselves...

Blind Melon van Schalkwyk went on first to warm the crowd

A quick introduction and then Keira's "jazz with subtitles"

After Keira's high octane opening we rang the changes with acapella group No Principles

Then back on stage for Mr "I don't play acoustic guitar" Stratisfear who delivered a fab set (on a guitar he borrowed from me)

He can play acoustic guitar all right. He closed with a marvellous solo reworking of Richard Thompson's "Shoot Out The Lights" (I didn't put him up to it)

Nechama Brodie turned up at one of our open mic nights a couple of months back and was nervous but completely captivated the audience. She worked her magic again last night with a set of originals and one cover. That cover, by coincidence, was Bert Jansch's "Needle Of Death".

Then two more strong sets (everybody was sooooo good) by Mike Rowe and then, new to TJ's, Shotgun Tori

"Mission control" and the view from mission control

A great night - really. All the performers delivered strong sets. As I said at the beginning of the show - 1/10 the price of Coldplay, lots of free parking, the beer comes to your seat and six great acts.

My thanks to the performers, to the technical team of Bryan, Bill and Graham, to Aubs1 for the photos (the action shots here are his) and to a fab audience.
    The Squonk Family Perspective

Just a small part of Keira's Rig

    Bob

    Bob yet again

    Brendan just blew us away!

    Keira wowed with the Tele

    Even Keira's shadow was rocking

    Nechama

Mike Rowe and bass string buzz

    Shotgun Tori

Bob was mentioning Janis Joplin for rock and roll evening

looks like a jam of note !!

whats that written on Keiras tele scratch plate??

Looks great... just one complaint, how come when I came through it was in the little venue!?
Just kidding... great pics too. Please post in the Performance thread sticky!
Great evening, great performances by all, but ... unfortunately for the rest, Keira , should I say rocked, or JAAAAAZZZZZZZEEEEDDDDD. That was excellent.

You came to an open mic night, and those are held in a smaller, friendlier room.

This was not open mic, all performers were there by invitation and we move these shows to a bigger room.

And just as well! I believe it was a record crowd last night.
Great pics guys. Fantastic to see.

Next step, video with good sound ?
                And from the Deefstes perspective:

In the event of something happening to him
There's a picture I would like you all to see
It's just a photograph of someone who hosted a whopper event!

Which included Keira who had us eating from the palm of her hand (particularly impressive considering the percussion brush and whatever else she had in her hand all at the same time). Very enjoyable set and talk about a comfortable and endearing stage personality!

No guitars, no hassle, No Principles

The artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Stratisfear. Let me tell you, this dude put in a stellar performance right there!

It's always difficult to single out a favourite when the styles are so diverse but Nechama Brodie has a beautiful style of songwriting, a riveting voice and accompanied by her bare bones style of guitar playing she makes for a very enjoyable act. I'd like to see her record some of her work.

How many different tunings can one artist use in one set? If your name is Mike Rowe, the formula is t=n+1 where t is the number of tunings and n is the number of songs. Seriously, Mike has a very entertaining style of playing and his voice is perfect for the Bob Dylan and Neil Young numbers he pulled off.

Shotgun Tori, a great act to finish the night on a bang. She has now usurped Bob's title (who will henceforth be known as PG-Rated Bob). ?

And one last one, Keira's toolkit with Nechama's shadow.

Thanks Bob, it really was a great evening. Also great to get to meet a few more forumites. Stu, Mity88 and Strataxe, shame on you for not introducing yourselves to the GFSA table >☹. Domhatch, Warren, Aubs, Squonk and Fingerpicker, it was great to get to meet up. Do it again some time?
Nice one PG-Bob! Cheers for a great evening!

Lots of variety in the acts and nice to meet some new peeps.

I was able to reserve one table for GFSA. I tried to give as much notice as possible - which wasn't much notice come to think of it.

when those guys came around asking how we found out about TJ's, i asked if they could direct me to some more forumites, they either didnt hear me or they didnt know coz i got no answer...so sorry
My step-son and his china. They didn't know where the GFSA table was. Because I hadn't told them. Next time ask for me by name.
Didn't uncle Squonk promise to design, print and sell GFSA t-shirts or something like that?
                            ?

Wish I had resources or knew anything about T-Shirt Printing :-[
But it would be great. Anyone on the forum have this kind of knowledge??

Well, not the worst, next time... we now know what you look like.
firstly thanks to Bob for arranging a fabulous evening ........

and lets congatulate Bob on achieving the highest attendance for any show at TJ's congrats....... for those that don't know bob was actively working on this for the last 2 months and the show was absolutely proffesionally organised ........

and he planned the evening so well with very diverse acts........ from me with my jazz, to an accapella group , to Brendon doing his acoustic and vocal thing , to nechama doing her slinky and moody originals (btw she was my all time favourite act of the night...and that is in no way taking anything away from the other amazing acts ...but for me her style and songs just struck a captivating nerve with me ...her voice simply floats over the music ...watch this girl she has all the potential to go far ) then mike rowe is a classic 70's type artist .... and the audience loved his 70's classics) then the final act was Shotgun Tori (a longtime friend of mine) who is an alternative nu folk artist and can be seen at most of the national festivals.....
so diversity was the theme of the evening ......

THANKS so much for all the guys from GFSA that made the effort to attend........ the support is always welcome....... and unfortunately the night was so full (not a bad thing) but it prevented us drifting around the room socialising so if someone was not at your table or you bumped into them in the 10 min interval you never even knew they were there........ so from my part if i missed someone , sorry but there's always next time anyway you may be happy i was not hanging out with you cos it seems i'm down with flu this morning ?

and thanks to Aubs for the awesome pics........ (and aubs we must talk re that offer too ?...soon ) i see deeftes was also doing the photo thing ... thanks guys

i got that guitar at the same time we had to put down our 12 yr old Corgi , Guilia so that script is a memorial to her , it says "in loving memory, Guilia, "the big dog" ( we used to call her the "big dog" ) but now my tele is named "The Big Dog" in memory of her .she was more than a dog but a part of our family

Jislaaik! All this love is making me blush :-[
My first time at TJs, and it was really very good. Thanx Bob. Was also nice to meet some new GFSAers as well as ones I've met before.

I thought all the acts were slick, and professional. I have to agree with Keira, Nechema who did all original songs except one, is an awesome artist. I quite liked Mike Rowe's take on (especially) Neil Young's "Old man..."

.......and I heard a rumour that a certain rock guitarist is seriously thinking of going permanently acoustic,.......any truth in that B? ? So two Strats going up for sale soon, or to swap for a Larrivee ....... ?

For those of you who want to see what all the fuss is about, Nechama will be back at Marks Park on the 26th of this month as part of the next Andy McGibbon's Acoustic Forum. Andy was there last night and like, it seems, most people was very impressed by her set and and so signed her up at the end of the evening.
