Gleaming the Cube

Picked up a Roland Cube 40XL yesterday from the Toms sale. Went in there looking to get the 15 for an amazing price of under R800, but the best salesman in the building convinced me otherwise (the salesman was Roland... although I did get some good service from some of the other guys). Its just got so many features but the ones which swung it for me was the built-in looper (I need it now as StephenG is getting my Boss) and the great distortion tones. Just wanted to check if you other Cube owners out there have any tips or tricks that you have learnt or some of your favourite settings. PS: Was goint to call the topic "Gleaming The Cube" but not sure how many people here would have got the reference 8)

I can use this to mark off the settings for a specific tone if I want to remember it for later. Obviously the layout will be slightly different for the other Cubes but it may be useful nonetheless. My wife just took our little kid out so that I could get some work done in peace and quiet. So naturally I plugged into the Cube and tested it out at volume :-[ (first empty house since I got it!) 8)

It's loud.

I only took it to notch 4 on the clean channel (so that's about 2,5 out of ten) and that was too loud for me and had all the dogs in the neighbourhood going off. Very impressed.

Also tried some effects at volume and its like playing a different effects pedal. The distortion is very clean and sharp and it handles wah's beautifully.

I'm gonna get me a cube 40 XL as well whithin the next few days...
It seems like the best amp in its price range! I also have a micro cube which is pretty awesome!

I got two Hosa Dual Latching Footswitches off eBay - so far so good and just adds another dimension to the amp. I have hardly used any effects pedals (apart from for tuning as I dont like bending down to the amp to tune all the time), but playing time has been seriously limited - with two kids now, one of them only a couple weeks old, by the time they're in bed and we have eaten, even sitting down to watch a bit of telly is a mission!

This is a hectic problem for me as well. I am starting to go well past midnight these days. Our 2 and and a half year old has changed his bedtime from between 19:00 - 20:00 to closer to 21:00. School teachers also need to contain work to during school hours ? I have been assisting the 10 and 13 year olds with assignments and using all kinds of methods to get them to study.

Parenting isn't easy ? And I haven't started on being a husband yet!

Guys, I hear your concerns and I know it's not easy but you absolutely have to find time to do these things. Trust me, as difficult as it might be to make time for playing guitar, experimenting with your amp and trying out different footswitches and pedals, it really is crucial that you make time for it.

The thing is, when those kids grow older and you can't show them how to operate a Roland Cube through footswitches, you will never forgive yourself ?

Yeah... easier said than done! I am struggling hey, kids are the most rewarding things in the world, but being a parent is also the hardest thing I have ever done - I work from home so am very hands-on, and trying to fit 8 hours of work in and still try keep the family going is tough. Utmost respect for single parents. And parents of twins!

I sold my foot switch for my Cube x15 because it only lets you swap between jc clean and lead channels BUT to turn on effects you have to use the effects and delay/reverb controls on the amp. Those effects then affect both channels so it's kinda pointless really I found... Unless of course I was doing something wrong?

You would have to get the Dual Boss FS-6 pedal which allows you to change between channels and turn EFX on or off.
Or get 2 FS-5U(or cheaper equivalents) and connect with a 2 into 1 cable

it's all in the manual ?

If I'm not mistaken, the Cube 15X doesn't allow for it, regardless of which pedal you use. It's different from the Cube 40X or 80X.

You are right, the 15X doesn't have EFX only Amp Sims. I was talking about my 30x :-[

I got my Cube today and I'm very happy!!
The Power squeezer mode can be very handy if you don't want to wake the neighbors , but it takes away alot of the bass and mid tones , so the tone is just not the same...
So other than that, its a very awesome amp and I would recommend it to any beginner or intermediate players as a good practice amp or maybe even an amp for small gigs!
