was browsing the guitar mags in CNA today and spotted the billy corgan strat.. a nice mix of retro bits.. I want one ☹

article said something along the lines of its a copy of his 70s strat with lace pickups he used all the time and loved. the drummer sold it to him and it was eventually stolen at a gig in 2001 and he hasnt found a guitar hes comfortable with.

There is a review of one in the new Guitarist magazine. I absolutely love the fact that it is a hardtail.

It comes with DiMarzio custom designed pickups - his originals were a red/silver/blue Lace Sensor set from bridge to neck.

hrm, this makes me wonder whether I should try find some lace's for my strat, Im itching for a pickup upgrade and got offered gold lace a while ago but the guy only had 2 and I didnt have the cash (think he wanted R250 ea.. which now sounds really cheap)

Well, this is a Highway1 body and finish, with different pickups. So, you could buy a Highway1 for around R9000 and modify it, if you want the same type guitar without the heavy price.

I am not the type to buy a guitar that is identicle to an artists, unless i am a HUGE fan. Billy Corgan strat? Na. Hendrix, or SRV? HELL YEAH! Why dont you buy a highway1 and customise it to your own style. Have your own signiture series I say!

Im already trying to see what black volume knobs and pickup selectors go for ? pickups, I'll try to find lace ones, quite scared to ask what the dimarzios go for

Some of those pickups (possibly just the 1) are custom designed for this specific guitar - I don't know if they are available as spares yet from DiMarzio.
The other thing is the neck - the H'Way won't be the same (He goes for the 70's vibe) - but YES, you could block the trem I suppose.
There MIGHT be 1 or 2 of these axes in JHB - that's where they all went apparently - try Marshall ?

No offense to fender fans, I have one myself, but I have a hard time justifying paying 20k for anything with a bolt on neck.
I'd rather get a 90's Japanese strat and mod it to this one.

bolt-on neck." - all traditional Strats and Teles have a bolt-on neck - did you mean a 3-bolt neck perhaps - or that you would only be willing to pay that kind of money for a glue/set or through neck design ?

I meant bolt on neck vs set neck. Say you take a Gretch(spelling?) of 20k compared to a strat of 20K. The amount of work going into the gretch is just so much more. Just my 2 cents.

True - labour wise the only problem is, final product QUALITY WISE the Fender will be 20 k and the Gretsch will be 40 k to get the same quality - the Fender will be USA made with a good resale value whereas the Gretsch will be Jap made (often great build quality, but less resale value) - ironically Fender owns Gretsch now anyway ! ?
