A Reasonably priced guitar... that's a STAR?!

SvR65

Hey guys,

I'd like to hear GFSA's thoughts and opinions on this one:

What guitar, at a reasonable price ( I know this varies for everyone, so lets set it at max R6k) do ya'll think is worth checking out?

And, does anyone have first hand experience with the Reverend guitars? (See the buckshot is around R6k from Guitartone)

?

AFAIK, Alan does. Maybe drop him a PM, in fact I'm sure he will respond soon to your question.

I have dealt with GuitarTone, (bought two guitars from them, Gibson LP Custom and an ES 335) and I can tell you without any reservation, that they are amazing people to do business with .... the Reverends may be well worth looking into.

Strat type? Les paul? Tele?

Other options are the Yamaha Pacifica 112Y or Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster

Both kick ass guitars taking down guitars from the position that cost more than twice as much.

In that price range I'd just look for a 2nd hand Ibanez RG550 or RG750 series, you seem them going for that quite often around South Africa as generally people don't realise how phenominal they are ?

although you will definitely have trouble finding one second-hand (which speaks volumes in and of itself), look for a second-hand tokai made-in-japan lp, or take a gander at the newly-landed made in china versions. can't speak to the latter first-hand, but i believe they are worth a look, and of the former i have some experience and can heartily recommend 'em.

good luck

Hmm, I have had the privilege of playing two Tokais... both super nice guitars!!

But thanks for the feedback guys...

Must say I'm really curios as to how those Reverend's are... just a pity they are based in the Cape.

definitely take a look at the brand 'Vintage'
they really punch well above their weight (price point)

I have one of their Les Paul's and man talk about Tone!

so, apparently there will be tokais at crazy prices at the toms sandton sale this weekend. it may just be worthwhile hopping through if you possibly can. also i can give a +1 to the yamaha pacifica and the vintage range. the pacificas are really great guitars offering a wide range of tones, but pay attention to build quality. it's fairly, but not completely, consistent. i've owned one and it had a beautiful neck. i nearly picked up a vintage when i lived in oz - very impressed by bang for buck - but otherwise i don't know much about 'em.

wishing you good will with the hunting

The Reverend's are great! I have a Flatroc here in the studio (one of their Gretsch-like model) ATM. Different looking from the run-of-the mill, but still very good guitars in their own right.

They all definitely punch above their weight class (graphite nuts, roller string trees, locking tuners, and better than usual build quality) and have some rare and/or unique features - in particular, the "bass contour" control is one of the most useful controls I have ever used and makes all the guitars very flexible. The pickups are also better than I expect from guitars in these price ranges and well-matched to the specific model guitar.

One thing that has made them successful in the US (where they are also direct sales only, without distribution to other stores) is that the quality is very consistent and they are well set up (QC and setup is done in the US, rather the factory). So guys are comfortable in buying them online sight unseen. With Guitartone distributing them locally, you know you will have decent backup.
