Its quite a common one and its probably really easy to achieve...
It basically sounds like you're playing in a box, then it becomes fuller if that makes sense... the same tone, but, well, here's a good example:
At 3 seconds the 'box' effect starts, then at 7 seconds it comes out of the box. Any ideas?

sounds like the beginning bit is 'lo-fi' then at 7 seconds more guitars and the bass start. So the first bit is lower volume guitar with the bass and treble rolled off then the proper sound starts at 7 seconds. A Much overused effect on song intros if you ask me.

Just EQ all the low end out - a highpass filter with a cutoff frequency at about 350 Hz and turn it off when the bass and drums come in.
To get the "Old AM radio" effect, also boost 2 kHz with a bandpass filter or for the "telephone voice" do the same with a lowpass filter at about the same frequency or slightly higher.
Be aware, these "tricks" were old and already overused when I trained in the early 90's. ?
