I actualy also thought about parisian walkways , but does it count as instrumental ? Out in the fields also by Gary Moore could also have been an cool instrumental if it was not for the vocals. When i thought about my list there was allot of non-instrumental songs that could have easily been just great guitar tracks.

There are instrumental and vocal versions of Parisian Walkways. The original was instrumental.
Renesongs
Here is a random 10 of my top 50 guitar solos chosen on the merit that I don't think that they have been included in this thread.

Goodbye Porkpie Hat - Jeff Beck
Do You Hear the Voices You Left Behind - John McLaughlin
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Sach's Boogie - Joe Satriani
Donna Lee - Jaco Pastorius
Really - Mike Bloomfield
Jigsaw Puzzle Blues - Fleetwood Mac

Haven't heard the instrumental version, but the original was Thin Lizzy - with vocals.

OK, I got my dates mixed up. I got the instrumental version on a CD named 13 Rock Hard Hits.

The year is listed as 2000 on the site above, so obviously it is after the Phil Lynott recording.
I then have to withdraw my nomination. ?

Okay this is a damn hard list to think of but hey here goes...
1. Guthrie Govan - Waves (amazing feel and tone and melody and...)
2. John Petrucci - Lost Without You (I'm a sucker for a depro song with a good wah tone)
3. Neil Zaza - I'm Alright (awesome melody, great string skipping and just alot of fun to hear and play)
4. Mattias Eklundh - The Road Less Travelled (there's just something to the melody)
5. Jeff Beck - Cause We've Ended As Lovers
6. John 5 - The Washing Away Of Wrong (it's twisted, heavy and tasteful with a guest solo from Eric Johnson)
7. Steve Vai - For The Love Of God (no comments needed)
8. Joe Satriani - Rubina (the live version from Time Machine is an amazing example of melody and feel)
9. Dave Martone - The Four Horsemen (it's just awesome and pitch bendy and stuffs...can't really describe)
10. Bumblefoot - Guitars Suck (it's instrumental and AWESOME!)

Good list Chad!

You workin' next week? I'm in and will bring through my copy of Abnormal. Maybe some Mattias as well. Anything else you want to hear?
andrewjbryson
you got any recorded Greg Koch ? would love to hear some of the man who played my Baja ?
Satriani
Just wanted you all to take a listen to Gary Moore - The Prophet. Beautiful song, tho he sucks playing it live ☹

Interesting.... I don't listen to a lot of instrumental stuff. I do have Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow" handy. For me that's one of the few instrumental rock albums that is constantly interesting. I can admire players like Satriani, but I find it hard to sit through a whole album - even though he is a fantastic player.
However I have occasionally paid attention long enough, and might be able to draw up a list of 10 (but not ranked, just 10 that I like)...
Sleepwalk - Santo and Johnny
Rockin' in Rhythm - Richard Thompson
'Cos We Ended As Lovers - Jeff Beck
Cabo - Tananas
The Drummers Of England - Russ Barenberg
You Know What I Mean - Jeff Beck
The Claw - Jerry Donohue
The Siege Of Delhi - Martin Carthy
Takarasaka - Jerry Douglas
Dargai - Richard Thompson
Some of those available on Youtube. Donahue's version of the Claw is included in a short documentary that shows his remarkable string-bending skills. I used to think he had a b-bender installed in his Tele until I watched that clip. Makes you want to give up.
I've got a disc of instrumental stuff by Tom Verlaine that I need to dust off. Some of that is pretty interesting.

Hmmmm.... two pieces featuring steel guitar. I know otherwise perfectly sensible people who have problems with guitars that are operated horizontally. My inclusion of those pieces might be breaking forum rules or pushing them rather majorly. Please let me know and I'll scratch my head, pull out the splinters and then revise my list.

OK, my rather different top 10 list (although it may change next week ?) - not in order of preference (Tried to select one from each artist/musician) :
1. Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix, SRV (I prefer his version), and for a great alternative listen - Tuck & Patti, & also Laurence Juber's version
2. Concierto de Aranjuez-II, Adagio - Joaquin Rodrigo (probably one of the most melodic pieces I enjoy-blind spanish classical composer as well!!) - also enjoy listening to John Williams version against Santan Version (On Santana Brothers CD)
3. Europa - Santana, also Tuck & Patti's version (solo guitar-ES-175 I think)
4. Lenny - SRV (also Riveira Paradise)
5. Smokey Mtn. Drive - Steve Morse (actually the whole Structural Damage CD is awesome!)
6. Send Me an Angel - Neil Schon (also whole Beyond the Thunder CD is great/awesome. Cd info booklet goes into what guitars, effects etc he plays on each track - from vintage to V-Guitar system etc)
7. Farm Jazz - Larry Carlton - From the CD Renegade Gentleman with Terry McMillan on Harmonica - Fantastic "harp" playing !!!
8. Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
9. Montana - Phil Keaggy (also great instrumentals on his "220" CD)
10. Life Song - Robben Ford & The Blue Line
Also couldn't find space for Ry Cooder's "I thnk it's going to work out Fine" - great melodic slide work!!!

@ Bob - I've no problem with steel players, pedal or lap, Hawaiian - as far as I'm concerned they are guitars. Anyone complains, we'll strap 'em down and force them to watch Robert Randolph for a few days until they realise there is more to life than black, pointy guitars and distortion pedals ?
Myself, I tend to include even the more unusual instruments like oud, Stick and even the Z-tar as members of the guitar family.
arjunmenon
@ AR: Interesting that you should mention the Oud. A friend of mine based in Dubai is a guitar player and a brilliant Oud player. His name is Kamal Mussallam and his outfit's called the Kamal Mussallam Group. Give him a listen if you get the chance ? His drummer Roni Afif is brilliant!
